Sizing a Room Air Conditioner

Get the Right Sized Air Conditoner

At Universal Appliance and Kitchen Center

room air conditioner

So, you need a new room air conditioner. How do you make sure you get the right size? Below are a few tips from the folks at energystar.gov. Once you get the right size, the right place is Universal Appliance and Kitchen Center (UAKC). They carry the full line of both Soleus-AIr and Friedrich air conditioners, and are sure to have the right air conditioner for your needs at the best price.

While you don't want to get an air conditioner that is too small, it's also important that the air conditioner is not too large. While an over-sized room air conditioner will cool a room quickly, it also will not run long enough to do a good job of removing the humidity, leaving you with a cool room that is also damp.

Here is the chart published by energystar.gov

  • If more than two people regularly occupy the room, add 600 BTUs for each additional person.
  • If the unit is used in a kitchen, increase capacity by 4,000 BTUs.
  • Consider where you install the unit. If you are mounting an air conditioner near the corner of a room, look for a unit that can send the airflow in the right direction
