I was in the market for three appliances (stackable washer/dryer, refrigerator, dishwasher) and kind of stumbled onto Universal Appliance at Laurel Canyon/Ventura. I was eating at one of the nearby restaurants in the 'mini-mall', saw the store and ventured in. It was very impressive…the showroom space is a lot larger than it first appears. They have a large selection of current model appliances from all of the major manufacturers…mostly medium and high-end brands. I ended up buying a Bosch dishwasher, Jenn Air refrigerator and Maytag stackable washer/dryer.

What initially 'sold' me was the very professional help that I received from Maida, one of the sales associates. I had a few logistic/space problems that she helped me overcome. She would scour the computer for inventory and print up sheets on what I was considering. She would then take me to the exact model (or one similar) on the floor to discuss advantages/drawbacks of each appliance. The prices were totally competitive with what I had seen at the two other major appliance stores I had already shopped.

There was no major wait (maybe a week?) to get the items. The delivery guys showed up on time and installed everything properly. I did have one issue with the dryer not heating and within two days of my call, they sent someone out who was able to troubleshoot the problem and fix it quickly (at no charge).

What I liked about Maida is that she stayed in touch with me all along the way. She'd e-mail me a few days before a delivery just to remind me something was coming. She also took care of the paperwork required to get one of my manufacturers rebate. I made four or five phone calls to her during this process (what type of vent? what's the height? can the delivery guys bring…? etc.) and all calls were promptly returned the same day (except one when she was off and then she called me on her first day back).

I was very happy with the selection, service and consultative help that I received from my sales associate, Maida. Everyone may not have the same great experience that I had, but you should certainly include Universal when looking for appliances.

Ingredients

• 8 small navel oranges
• 1 small apple, chopped
• 1/2 cup halved seedless red grapes
• Slivered almonds and whole cloves

Directions

Choose which side of each orange will be the jack-o'-lantern's face; cut a thin slice from the bottom of each so that it rests flat. Cut another small slice from the top. Spoon out pulp. Chop pulp and combine with apple and grapes; set aside.

Cut faces as desired; decorate with cloves and almonds. Spoon fruit mixture into jack-o'-lanterns. Yield: 8 servings.

Choosing a built-in refrigerator can be a daunting task. Not only is it a major investment, but there are many considerations and options. Simply categorizing and listing the choices may be of some help so let's break it down.

First, what is a built-in refrigerator? It's a category of refrigerator designed to fit in an enclosure as a permanent part of the kitchen flush or nearly flush with surrounding kitchen cabinetry. We should distinguish between built-in refrigerators and counter-depth refrigerators. Built-in refrigerators are designed to be…well…built-in and attached to adjacent cabinets. Counter-depth refrigerators are versions of free-standing refrigerators, but with shallow depths. Their shallow depths allow them to roll in to a standard refrigerator cut out and fit nicely, only sticking out a few inches from a standard 24″ depth cabinet, but of course, they are not built-ins.

In the past, built-in units have typically been 84″ tall with compressors mounted on the top. Some European brands of built-ins now have compressors in the bottom, but are still taller than free-standing or counter depth refrigerators and are fully-flush with surrounding cabinets.

Built-in refrigerators are available in widths ranging from 27″ wide to 48″ wide. Many built-ins have depths that are 24 – 25″ so that they can be installed to fit flush with surrounding cabinetry.

Built-in refrigerators are available in side-by-side, bottom-freezer, french door, all refrigerator, and all freezer configurations.

Side-by-side built-in refrigerators are the most common configuration of built-in refrigerators. With a 48″ wide side-by-side, the combined refrigerator/freezer capacity is nearly 30 cu.ft. Choices include custom panels or stainless steel, and non-dispenser or dispenser models.

Bottom-freezer models up to 36″ wide have glide-out freeezer bins on the bottom and refrigerators on the top. They are purchased with either right hand or left hand door openings.

French-door refrigerators have become a very popular choice in free-standing refrigerators, so built-in refrigerators are now becoming availalbe in a variety of sizes and brands. KitchenAid and Jenn-Air have the largest, 42″ versions of French Door models.

All refrigerator and all freezer models can be purchased in the top compressor variety, or in the new “columns” available from some European manufacturers. They are often bought in pairs with one having a left door swing and the other a right door swing. Placed next to each other, customers can have as much as a 72″ wide refrigerator-freezer combination.

Some built-in refrigerators are available with external ice and water dispensers. Sub-Zero has recently introduced a model with an internal ice and water dispenser. Since built-in refrigerators are built to fit with surrounding cabinetry many models are built to accept cabinet panels. With a fully flush, fully integrated installation these units become indistinguishable from the surrounding cabinetry and sometimes not even identifiable as refrigerators.

We’ve been selling convection ovens in the U.S. for decades.
Yet, there are still many customers out there who shy away
from convection for several reasons. Here are some important
points to keep in mind:

Convection is an option. Though I regularly use this feature
in my oven at home, there are times when I elect not to use it.
My wife usually does not use convection, but there are times
that she chooses to. It’s up to you whether you want to use
the convection feature in your oven or not.

Convection is easy to use. Many convection ovens today
have an auto conversion feature allowing you to set your oven
just as you normally would. The oven then converts the
time/temperature as needed for convection cooking of your
favorite recpe.

Convection is more expensive. Well, yes. However, in most
cases if you want a manufacturer’s better range or oven
convection is an included feature – just as power steering and
automatic transmission is more expensive, but you can hardly
get a car without it.
