European style dishwashers have invaded the U.S.
...and it's not all bad. There is no question that over the last 15 years, European appliance manufacturers have had a great influence over the appliance industry in the US. Just looking at dishwashers for example, we can see a huge influence from Europe. In many parts of Europe, centuries old homes and neighborhoods, did not have plumbing and sewer systems capable of handling the disposal of large flows of soil laden water produced by U.S. style dishwashers. Instead, European dishwasher brands were designed to use far less water than American brands. In addition, they lacked the built-in food disposers of U.S. brands, and had built-in filters that required manual cleaning. For related reasons, European dishwashers used hotter water, far less detergent, and had much smaller, quieter motors. During the same time that European dishwashers were introduced here, U.S. energy laws began to kick in requiring that appliances use less and less water and energy. The end result of this all is that many of the dishwasher design principles of European dishwashers have been incorporated and adapted in U.S. brands so that all of the major appliance manufacturers have dishwashers that use less water, consume less energy, and run quieter than a dishwasher made ten or more years ago. Scrub Those Dishes
Over the past few years several dishwasher manufacturers have introduced features designed to remove caked on soil from dishes by focusing concentrated wash action in a certain area to scour baked on spaghetti sauce off that casserole dish. The latest entry is Frigidaire with its OrbitClean(tm) wash arm that focuses 4 times the water and detergent in a concentrated area. An oval wash arm attached to the end of the bottom arm, rotates like a satellite delivering extra wash action to the toughest spots on dishes. According to Frigidaire, this Energy Star rated dishwasher also boasts the best drying performance in the industry, and is the quietest in its class. The new Frigidaire Gallery Dishwasher with the exclusive OrbitClean(tm) wash arm is on sale now at Universal Appliance and Kitchen Center. If you buy before the end of June, Frigidaire has an introductory offer of an additional year warranty. Models with the OrbitClean(tm) wash arm are: FPHD2485, FGH2465, and FGBD2445. The Galley Kitchen - Choices Abound
The term galley kitchen refers to kitchens located against a single wall or in a corridor. Galley kitchens may connote an economy apartment. However, space limitations don't necessarily dictate style, perfomance, or quality in a kitchen remodel. A galley kitchen in a home might have a wall with a sink, dishwasher, freestanding range, and micro-hood located in a row as in the picture above. It might also feature a cooktop with an oven below and a built-in or counter-depth refrigerator as in the first picture below. Or a luxury galley kitchen could include a pro range with a custom hood enclosure and integrated built-in refrigerator with cabinet panels. The constraints are not entry level, mid-market, or luxury. Just as in any kitchen it's a matter of what works where, fits your budget, and is best for your home value and kitchen needs. Consult your design expert and then talk to the appliance experts at Universal Appliance and Kitchen Center. Appliances: fix the old or buy a new one?
So the dishwasher is making grinding noises and the dishes aren't getting clean. How much are you willing to spend before you call it quits and go shopping for a new dishwasher? There are some folks that say if the cost of repair is more than half the cost of a new one, then you should replace, but I'm not so sure that is a good rule of thumb. You might consider the age of the dishwasher first. Dishwashers last on average 10-12 years. If your dishwasher is approaching the end of its life cycle, then you should think twice about footing a big repair bill. Another factor would be costs of operation. New energy saving dishwashers often use only 4-5 gallons of water per cycle - some even less. The 10 year old guzzler uses many times that. Finally, you should know that investments in the kitchen have among the biggest paybacks of any home improvement you could make in terms of resale value of your house. If you elect to repair be sure to call Universal Kitchen and Appliance Center for prompt, reliable service. Benefits of steam dishwashers
Most better dishwashers already do a good job of getting dishes clean so how can steam help? Well, steam dishwashers don't necessarily use steam in the main wash cycle. One brand of steam dishwashers has a pre-wash steam cycle that loosens baked on foods, so that there is no need to hand pre-rinse dishes that are heavily soiled, thereby saving water. Other brands use steam as a finishing cycle to remove spots from stemware and leave the them sparkling. Either way, steam is an add-on that can make your life easier. Ask the folks at Universal Appliance and Kitchen Center to recommend the right steam dishwasher for your needs.
