Many Major Appliances are Made in the U.S.
Where are cooking appliances made? Customers often want to know where an appliance is manufactured. A surprising number of major appliances sold in the U.S. are manufactured here also. Let's take a look at cooking products. Here are where the Big 3 appliance manufacturers in the U.S. (Whirlpool, Electrolux/Frigidaire, and GE) make their ranges, cooktops, and ovens. Whirlpool Corporation also includes Amana, Jenn-Air, KitchenAid, and Maytag brands. They have a large facility (one million sq. ft.) in Cleveland, Tenn. where freestanding and slide-in ranges are built, as well as cooktops and wall ovens. In addition, they also build some ranges in their Tulsa, Oklahoma facility. Headquartered in Benton Harbor, Michigan, Whirlpool is the largest appliance manufacturer in the world. Over 80% of the appliances that Whirlpool sells in the U.S. are manufactured here. Whirlpool claims to employ more U.S. workers than all their competitors combined. Electrolux/Frigidaire has their range factory in Springfield, Tennessee, and has build a new cooktop facility near Memphis. It's worth noting that the Swedish firm Electrolux is the 2nd largest appliance manufacturer in the world, and has a major U.S. presence. GE makes ranges and ovens in their Roper facility in Lafayette, GA. GE also has strong ties to Mabe, a Mexican appliance company that builds GE's gas ranges. In spite of GE's affiliation with Mabe (GE has a 48% stake), GE is a leader in "insourcing", and has been adding appliance manufacturing jobs in the U.S. for several years. In addition, GE is quite proud -

4th of July Washer and Dryer Sale
Get the Best Deal on Washers and DryersGood Advice for Buying a New Washer and DryerThere are a lot of washers and dryers sold during 4th of July Holiday period. Unfortunately, customers rushing to buy the lowest price or the biggest discount often get products that don't suit their needs. Advertised specials are very tempting, but you shouldn't have to settle for a product that's too noisy or doesn't have the cycles you need to do the job. Here's a quote from a customer who bought a really low end washing machine from a home improvement store. “This is not a washer you can start and walk away from to do other things…. I hate this machine with the passion of 1000 white hot suns. I would go on, but it is laundry day and I have to go back downstairs to babysit the washer.” Don't let this happen to you. Universal Appliance and Kitchen Center (UAKC) can help you make the best choice that suits your needs at the lowest possible price. UAKC sells all the major laundry brands - Frigidaire, GE, LG, Maytag, Samsung, Whirlpool, and more. Here is a recommendation. Take some time to assess your needs. A new washer will likely fall into one of three categories: Front load washer. These washers open and close from the front. They're energy efficient and use very little water. A full-sized version will cost more than the traditional agitator type washer that Mom used to have. Top load high efficiency (HE) -

Under Counter Ice Machines and Ice Makers
Choosing an Ice Machine or Ice Maker at UAKC If you find yourself going through more ice than your refrigerator's icemaker can produce, it may be time to consider getting a separate unit to make your ice. Universal Appliance and Kitchen Center (UAKC) has Southern California's best availabilty and lowest prices for undercounter ice machines and icemakers. There are two basic types of ice producing appliances available. Undercounter icemakers work on the same principle as the icemaker in a refrigerator. They are actually downsized freezers that have an icemaker built in. The icemaker consists of a tray that fills with water. The water freezes into cubes, and the icemaker "harvests" the cubes by dumping them into a container in the bottom of the freezer. The process repeats itself until the container fills with ice. Then the icemaker quits making ice until the ice level in the container starts to drop. The ice cubes are kept frozen by a cooling unit in the icemaker. An ice machine has a metal mold or cold plate. Water is continually sprayed upward onto the cold plate and freezes. Contaminants in the water fall off leaving clear ice. Heat is then used to separate the clear cubes from the mold or plate and the cubes fall into the bin below. Unlike an icemaker, an ice machine has no separate cooling unit to keep the ice cubes frozen. The ice machine continues to replenish the ice -

Buying a Clothes Dryer
When to buy a clothes dryer1. When Purchasing a Washing Machine: There is no question that more dryers are purchased in connection with washer purchases than at any other time. It makes sense to have a matching dryer to go with your washer. So, it's not a surprise that around sixty percent of laundry buyers choose a matching laundry pair. A matching dryer will have the right capacity to handle a full load of clothes from the washer. Having this kind of throughput is important. When you're washing multiple loads of clothes it's nice to have the dryer available for use when the clothes are done washing. And, it sure perks up the laundry room to have a matching washer/dryer pair. 2. When you can save money:Washer/Dryer pairs are often promoted as sets. If you can get a great deal on the pair, take advantage of the savings. Ask the experts at Universal Appliance and Kitchen Center for any manufacturer specials on laundry pairs. 3. When the old dryer breaks down: Assuming "old" means 12-15 years old or more, if your dryer breaks down, there's a good chance the repair bill will exceed the value of your dryer. Time for a visit to Universal Appliance and Kitchen Center. 4. When switching from gas to electric or vice versa: If you move into a house with only a 240v receptacle for an electric dryer and you bring a -

Buying a New Dishwasher
Choose the RIGHT Dishwasher for your needs.4 Dishwasher Buying TipsA customer was shopping for a new dishwasher at the big chain home improvement store. A dishwasher priced at $399 was next to another dishwasher priced at $499. He asked the sales associate, "What's the difference?" The orange aproned salesperson replied with a smirk, "A hundred dollars". Funny, but sad. How helpful is that kind of answer when you're investing hundreds of dollars on a product that you hope to have for 10 or more years? The first tip in buying a new dishwasher is to work with appliance specialists. Don't expect to get expert advice on appliances from a salesperson who also sells tools, lumber, lawn and garden supplies, and light bulbs. At Universal Appliance and Kitchen Center (UAKC) you'll receive expert help from appliance professionals. The associates at UAKC are factory trained and have years of appliance sales experience. Assess your needs. Spend some time thinking about what you want in a dishwasher. A person who lives alone, doesn't entertain, and eats most of his or her meals in a restaurant will need a vastly different dishwasher than the head of household for a family of 6 who entertains regularly, serves food on fine china, and uses premium glassware. Consider water consumption and energy savings. A dishwasher with a higher initial cost may in fact have a lower lifetime cost than a cheaper dishwasher that uses more electricity and more water. Compare features and benefits of different models and -

Past and Present Appliance Innovations
Two Old Appliance InnovationsAnd Their New VariationsSome of you might have been around when the microwave oven was thought to be a fad. And many of us remember when convection cooking was only available on expensive luxury ovens. We briefly look at these categories below and how they are evolving today. See them all at Universal Appliance and Kitchen Center (UAKC).1. Microwave ovens.Although the first microwave ovens date back to the 1950's, it wasn't until the late '70s that they became commonplace. Today, microwave ovens are considered a standard appliance in homes across America. While we could still debate some of the pros and cons of microwave cooking, the vote is in and microwave ovens will continue to be offered by the full line major appliance brands for the forseeable future.Microwave oven drawers.A valuable design alternative to the microwave hood (which some consider ergonomically unsound), the microwave drawer adds additional opportunities for the placement of a microwave. Under the counter, the microwave drawer is easily accessible and already has become commonplace in universal design schemes. There are a large selection of brands with microwave drawer options. Sharp is a leader in the category, but Dacor, Jenn-Air, Thermador, and Viking are just a few of the other brands avaialble.2. Convection ovens. This is a product that has been around for a long time and has gradually become a popular cooking method. Cooking with convection has been proven to save time and cook more evenly. Convection is -

Laundry Centers at Universal Appliance and Kitchen Center
Washers and Dryers for Small SpacesLaundry Centers are an All-in-One SolutionWhen space is at a premium you may not have room for a full-size, side by side washer and dryer pair. A laundry center may be just what you need. Laundry centers feature a washer on the bottom and a dryer above. Universal Appliance and Kitchen Center (UAKC) carries major brand laundry centers from GE, Frigidaire, Whirlpool, Speed Queen, and Maytag.Just like side-by-side laundry units, these laundry centers are available with either gas or electric (240v) dryers, and need to be vented outside. Compact models are 24" wide, while 27" wide laundry centers will give you full-versions of both washer and dryer in a stacked configuration. The 27" models not only have larger capacity, but will also have most of the same features and cycles that you'd find on their separate counterparts. Carefully check all dimensions (height, width, and depth) to make sure that the laundry center will fit in the space you have available. You'll need hot and cold water connections, as well as 240v. electricity or gas line for the dryer, and a dryer vent.If you don't have either 240v. electricity or gas available for the dryer there are special models designed to work on 120v. but they will take longer to dry. There are also dryer models that are designed to work without an external vent, but there are tradeoffs to be made with these dryers as well. Finally, you may
