Induction cooktops have been a big hit for several years. Now, ranges have begun to appear featuring induction technology. GE is launching new Profile models of slide-in and freestanding ranges which included induction cooktops. They both feature 19 power settings and a huge 5.3 cubic ft. convection oven. Knobs have been replaced with illuminated front touch controls that are ADA compliant.

LG has been expanding their appliance brand to offer a complete line of appliances. Their new Studio line includes matching kitchen appliances in all categories – refrigerator, dishwasher, range or cooktop/oven, and microwave. LG Studio appliances have a clean-modern look and include a gas cooktop, a double wall oven, deluxe electric slide-in range, a microwave-hood combination, and a high-performance steam dishwasher. Designers have been creating beautiful modern kitchens with an elegant white theme only to find themselves without a selection of white appliances to complement the white cabinets. Now Miele's new Brilliant White Plus appliances are helping to bring new life to white as an appliance option. New from Dacor is the Discovery Wine Station, an automated, temperature-controlled, four-bottle wine dispenser for the home. Enjoy just the right wine in the right amount at each pour, whether you desire just a taste, a full, or a half-glass, the Dacor Wine Station is Ideal. The argon gas preservation system shields the unit from harmful ambient UV rays and allows wine to be opened and preserved for up to 60 days. The dispenser comes with its own energy efficient thermo-electric cooling system keeping an ideal temperature for either red or white wine. Wines are protected and safe behind a locking door. The dispensing system is operated using LCD screens and touch controls which display wine varieties, vintages, temperature settings and pouring volume.

GE has launched a new appliance color, Slate, that quite literally takes the shine off stainless steel. It's worth a look. The muted grey finish really goes well with a variety of cabinet as well as countertop finishes.

GE says that it not only looks good in a matched suite, but also works well in a kitchen with Stainless or other color appliances. The shiny brushed metal touch points (knobs, handles, etc.) provide a bit of contrast and also help bridge the slate color to tie together with stainless or other brushed finishes in a kitchen.

Unlike Stainless Steel, the Slate finish resists fingerprints and is easy to keep clean. The subdued slate color is both unique and sophisticated. When should I replace a major appliance?

Seems like an easy question to answer doesn't it? There is a chart below that shows the average life of appliances, but there really is much more that you should know, to decide if it is time for you to replace an appliance.

The chart below shows the average life of appliances by category. So, if a refrigerator has an average life span of 13 years that means that some refrigerators last 20 years or more and others don't last past 5 years. There are many reasons for this.

1. Some users maintain their appliances better than others. When was the last time you brushed the dust off your refrigerator condenser coils?
2. Some owners simply use their appliances more often than others. Some dishwashers get used nearly every day, and others only once a week.
3. Some brands and appliance models are built to last longer. Research your purchase to get the most durable appliance you can.
4. There is a law of averages at work here. There is no way you can tell for sure whether any individual appliance will break down before or after its average life expectancy date.

Of course, sometimes perfectly good refrigerators get “retired” because homeowners want to replace them with the latest and greatest models. Maybe they can justify a new purchase by moving the old unit up to their cabin, or give it to a son or daughter who is just starting out.

Also, homeowners may choose to replace a refrigerator because they don't want to pay the cost of repair, figuring that to invest another $200 or more in repairing a 10 year old refrigerator isn't worth it.

Older refrigerators are energy hogs, and there has been a strong movement to get people to replace them with Energy Saving refrigerators. In fact, it makes good financial sense to replace a refrigerator that costs $100 a year to run with one that only costs $50-$60 a year to operate.

So there are many reasons to get new appliances rather than wait for the old ones to break down. Admittedly, these are extreme examples. If the budget allows, consider “taking it up a notch” on your appliances. Let your kitchen sell your house by being the best available when compared to other homes in the same price range, but do not let your kitchen far exceed the kitchens in comparable homes or you will not get a return on your investment.

Worse yet, is the luxury home with cheap looking appliances and brands that don’t fit with high end buyer expectations. Real estate experts say installing bargain basement appliances in a luxury home, can greatly reduce the value of the home and make it hard to sell.
