Mass Premium Appliances
Affordable Upgraded Appliances at Universal Appliance and Kitchen CenterMass Premium Appliance BrandsUniversal Appliance and Kitchen Center (UAKC) is Headquarters in Southern California for the "mass" appliance brands like GE, Frigidaire, Maytag, and Whirlpool. And most of you know that with locations in Studio City and Calabasas they also focus on the "luxury" brands including Wolf Sub Zero, Viking, Thermador, Miele and Gaggenau. There is also a growing market for brands known as "mass premium" appliance brands. The mass premium moniker fits those brands that are NOT in the upper stratosphere price-wise with names like Sub Zero and Miele, but nevertheless are in a higher price category than GE, Whirlpool, and Frigidaire's more entry level offerings. The mass premium category includes KitchenAid, Bosch, GE Café/Profile, and Electrolux. We might even consider Korean brands LG and Samsung as in the mass premium category as well as the Italian labels recently launched in the U.S. Fulgor Milano and Bertazzoni. All these brands are strategically positioned with pricing and feature levels definitely above the mass, but nevertheless not luxury. (It gets fuzzy. Electrolux brand certainly has some products that might be considered above mass premium, and Jenn-Air purposely describes itself as "super premium", evidently meaning more than mass premium, but not quite luxury). In any case let's take a look at two brands who seem to be comfortable calling themselves mass premium - KitchenAid and Bosch.Part of the Whirlpool family of brands, KitchenAid is focused on the kitchen (does not have washers and dryers). Here's how -

Undercounter Appliances Gaining Popularity
Appliances that Fit Under Your Countertops Visit Universal Appliance and Kitchen Center Not long ago the only appliances placed underneath a counter in most homes were the dishwasher and perhaps a trash compactor. Now, there are a host of appliances configured to fit underneath the counter. In fact, it's hard to think of a major appliance category that does not have products configured to work under a countertop. Universal Appliance and Kitchen Center has a huge selection of appliances from many brands that will fit under your countertop. Among the reasons to install an appliance under a counter, would be not only to save counter space, but also for accessibility. It's also good to remember that the cabinets above your countertop are only 12" deep, not the 24" that most appliances are designed to occupy. Microwave ovens are no longer relegated to the countertop or over the range. Today, microwave oven drawers open and close at the push of a button and are perfect for undercounter installation. In addition, the big kitchen refrigerator is being replaced or at least supplemented with refrigerator and freezer drawers.Sub Zero has recently introduced a host of new undercounter refrigeration appliances that are also designed for living spaces other than the kitchen. The phrase that is being used is "point-of-use" appliances. For example, it might be a good idea to have a refrigerator in a recreation area stocked with snacks and drinks for the kids. Entertainment areas are being equipped -

Side by Side Refrigerators
Choosing a New Side by Side Refrigerator While French door refrigerators seem to be all the rage these days, side by side refrigerator still hold a significant share of refrigerator industry sales. Reasons for customers preferring side by side refrigerators include the better access to the freezer compartments (i.e. no digging to find the ice cream), less critical space used for ice storage, and overall better organization and visibility. Whatever your reason, if a side by side is your choice here are three fundamental choices you need to make. Universal Appliance and Kitchen Center can help you choose the configuration that works best for you. Built-In A built-in side by side will fit flush inside your cabinet space, and could even be "integrated" with matching cabinet panels and hidden hinges. Depending on the brand, size, and features this refrigerator could cost $10,000 or more. Counter depth A counter depth side by side refrigerator is going to fit nearly flush with the countertops (25") not counting the door. While they're not built-in, they're attractive looking, and blend into the surrounding cabinets nicely. Full depth A full or standard depth refrigerator will protrude from the kitchen cabinets. This style refrigerator offers more capacity, but can often be 35" deep or more. Consumers often complain about having to navigate around the refrigerator. As you can see, there are tradeoffs among the 3 basic refrigerator configurations. In addition, you'll need to decide among models featuring dispensers and non-dispenser models. You may also have a -

Under Counter Ice Machines and Ice Makers
Choosing an Ice Machine or Ice Maker at UAKC If you find yourself going through more ice than your refrigerator's icemaker can produce, it may be time to consider getting a separate unit to make your ice. Universal Appliance and Kitchen Center (UAKC) has Southern California's best availabilty and lowest prices for undercounter ice machines and icemakers. There are two basic types of ice producing appliances available. Undercounter icemakers work on the same principle as the icemaker in a refrigerator. They are actually downsized freezers that have an icemaker built in. The icemaker consists of a tray that fills with water. The water freezes into cubes, and the icemaker "harvests" the cubes by dumping them into a container in the bottom of the freezer. The process repeats itself until the container fills with ice. Then the icemaker quits making ice until the ice level in the container starts to drop. The ice cubes are kept frozen by a cooling unit in the icemaker. An ice machine has a metal mold or cold plate. Water is continually sprayed upward onto the cold plate and freezes. Contaminants in the water fall off leaving clear ice. Heat is then used to separate the clear cubes from the mold or plate and the cubes fall into the bin below. Unlike an icemaker, an ice machine has no separate cooling unit to keep the ice cubes frozen. The ice machine continues to replenish the ice -

At Universal Appliance and Kitchen Center (UAKC) it wouldn't be unusual for a customer to get $2,000 or even more from Viking, Sub Zero, or Thermador on a luxury kitchen appliance package. The appliances can easily cost $25,000 or more. However, earning up to $2000 in rebates on a GE kitchen package is really quite a special offer. Considering that most appliance rebates among the popular brands such as GE, Frigidaire, and Whirlpool are in the $50 to $100 range, earning up to $2000 on GE appliances is a really good deal. For example, purchasing an upscale KitchenAid dishwasher, range, microwave, and refrigerator under their current rebate offer will on average work out to $500. What all of this amounts to is that if you're shopping for appliances in the popular/mid-level brand category you should take a hard look at GE, GE Profile, or GE Cafe for pricing and rebate savings. These are great brands -

Turning the Work Triangle around with Sub Zero Refrigerators and Freezers
Sub-Zero's anywhere refrigerators and FreezersSub-Zero Headquarters at Universal Appliance and Kitchen CenterThe Work TriangleFor decades designers have been taught and have been teaching about a work triangle in the kitchen. A place to cook food (range or oven), a place to store food (refrigerator), and a place to prepare food (sink). The idea was that these points are connected by an imaginary line forming a triangle and should be in somewhat close (but not too close) proximity.Recently, the work triangle has been challenged by the notion that it might make sense to locate refrigerator or freezer drawers to be placed in a pantry area for example. Beer and wine might be kept cool in an entertainment area, and kids could access fruit and snacks from an undercounter refrigerator located in a rec room. Designers now feel free to adapt the idea of the work triangle to the notion of activity flows. With their new integrated refrigerator line Sub-Zero is promoting the "Anywhere" refrigerator. It's perhaps not revolutionary, but certainly evolutionary as Sub-Zero's new refrigerator lineup makes it easier and more practical to locate refrigerators freezers and wine storage nearer the point of use than in a traditional work triangle. Here are some of the new appliances from Sub-Zero that can expand your work triangle. Hide your Refrigerator vs Display your Refrigerator
Refrigerators Can Strut or they can DisappearMake your choice at Universal Appliance and Kitchen CenterUniversal Appliance and Kitchen Center (UAKC) is your best choice in Southern California for refrigerators of all styles and colors. Take a look at just a few of the different configurations of refrigerators available today at UAKC.Refrigerators that disappearSome refrigerators can be hidden from view with cabinet panels so that they blend into the surrounding cabinetry. When even hinges, grills, and toe-kicks are invisible the refrigerator qualifies for the designation of "integrated".The photo below depicts a GE Monogram Integrated refrigerator and wine storage unit.Non-integrated refrigeratorsIt's a matter of degree since some refrigerators have cabinet panels that match, but parts such as hinges or grills are still visible. These built-in refrigerators are not integrated, but still match existing cabinetry. The photo below shows a Sub Zero built-in refrigerator with cabinet panels that is not integrated because the hinges and toekick are showing.A refrigerator doesn't have to be built-in to accept cabinet panels. The french door refrigerator below from Jenn-Air is a cabinet depth model. While it isn't going to be flush with surrounding cabinets it does blend in nicely, and is much less costly than a built-in refrigerator.Refrigerators that show-offThere is also a school of thought that a refrigerator should be a showcase and the center of attention in the kitchen. No refrigerator does a better job of calling attention
