Viking Turbo Chef Oven
New Viking Turbo Chef oven now in production We've written before about Viking's Turbo Chef oven. It's probably the first new technology in speed cooking for the home since the microwave oven. The air impingement technology is used widely in commercial applications by Viking's parent company, Middleby. However, this will be its first *serious launch for home use by a full-line major appliance company. The Viking Turbo Chef oven uses traditional radiant heating, combined with convection, microwave assist, and powerful Airspeed Technology™. Using patented jetplates on the top and bottom of the oven heated air is forced over the food at various speeds helping the food to cook up to 15 times faster than conventional ovens. How does that translate? Well, a 12 lb. turkey will cook in the Turbo Chef in only 42 minutes; 20 spears of asparagus in just 45 seconds. COMMERCIAL PERFORMANCE 7 Speedcook modes: Bake, Roast, Broil, Air-Crisp, Toast, Dehydrate, and Favorites "Favorites" stores your custom recipes Advanced mode for manual adjustments Microwave, defrost, and standard convection bake modes Accompanying the the Turbo Chef upper oven, is a full-featured 3.8cu.ft. self-cleaning convection oven/proofing oven/warming oven. Appliance Rebates Expiring Soon
Rebates Come and Rebates Go Appliance rebates come and go for a variety of reasons. For example, over many years Maytag has always had a month long event May is Maytag Month. I'll let you guess when that sale begins and ends. :-) Rebate dates lasting several months or even a year often will end at the end of a three or six month period eg. March, June, September, or December. And somtimes, sale events and their rebates are holiday based beginning before and ending after specific holiday periods, such as Presidents' Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, etc. Right now, at UAKC we have a number of ongoing rebates expiring at the end of May. Some of them are, in fact, connected with Memorial Day Sales (May 25th). Don't let these rebates get away from you. They vary in value, but as you can see with the GE example, the amounts are not trivial: Appliance Rebates Expiring in *May Rebates below expire on May 30 or May 31 unless otherwise noted. Locating Your Microwave
Find the right place for your microwave Creative Design in the Kitchen One of a design professional's enduring issues with microwave ovens is where to locate them. Many designers fight the idea of locating the microwave over a range or in an upper cabinet. They argue (correctly in my mind), that it is not ergonomically sound for most homemakers because it is too high, and it's certainly not ADA compliant in an over the range location. One solution is an oven microwave combination. It's certainly doable, but it does require a 24" deep cabinet top to bottom instead of the more common 12" upper cabinet over the counter. However, a microwave above the oven is also likely to put the microwave controls a bit too high, and certainly not ADA compliant or universal design. An option we've discussed before is an under counter installation. The main disadvantage of installing a microwave under the counter is that the microwave oven is too low. Manufacturers have worked to overcome this with a slide out drawer and/or controls that are rotated upward. That's a great solution. Here is another possibility that builders or designers could work into their plan. I really like this one. Nearly any brand or model of countertop or even drawer microwave oven will fit in this location. This particular Jenn-Air is designed as a built-in microwave, and is available in either a 30" or 27" width. The raised granite breakfast bar is also super convenient. Of course this design -
