Smaller Appliances for Smaller Kitchens
More Appliance Choices for Small Spaces Small homes and condos can find more room in the kitchen with space-saving appliances. Fortunately, the field of smaller appliances has expanded greatly with appliance brands from Europe entering the field. Full size appliances in Europe are made to fit 60mm (24") cabinet widths rather than the 30" dimensions for most U.S. brands. In addition, many "apartment-sized" appliances have typically been de-featured and low-end models. No more. You can now choose from a wide-spectrum of brands from entry level to luxury brands made in more compact sizes. For example, standard dishwashers are designed to fit in a 24" space. However, there are a number of dishwasher brands that offer full-featured dishwashers that fit in an 18" space, such as the Bosch dishwasher. Click on the link below for a full description: Bosch 18" Dishwasher For those, that can't accommodate a full height dishwasher, Fisher & Paykel, as well as others, offer a space-saving dishwasher drawer. In cooking appliances, there are even more choices. Standard widths for ranges are 30", but choices abound in 24" or even 20" sizes. Here's a Bluestar range built for a 24" opening. Many cooktops, and ovens are 30", but here again there are many choices in 24" cooktops and ovens. UAKC, can even help you with a 2 burner cooktop if needed. Take a look at this Italian made Bertazzoni oven and cooktop made to fit a 24" opening. Click on the links below: Bertazzoni 24" Oven Bertazzoni 24" -

4 Tips on appliance care and usage
Myth or Fact? The truth about caring for your appliances. Here are 4 "Truths" that are widely circulated about appliance care and usage. See if you can guess which ones are factual and which ones are false. 1. You don't need to bother with replacing the water filter on your refrigerator on the recommended date. Manufacturers push the replacement date up so that they can sell more filters. Myth There is no doubt that appliance manufacturers like selling add-ons such as refrigerator water filters. However, there is also no evidence that they recommend premature replacement of filters. It's amazing how many folks think so. The only excuse for not replacing your filter regularly is if you have RO (reverse osmosis) water piped to the refrigerator. In that case, you should consider removing and replacing the filter with the plug that originally came with your refrigerator. 2. It's not necessary to self-clean your oven whenever you have a spill or smudge that's bigger than a quarter. Fact If you have a self-cleaning oven, it's really a matter of personal preference, and usage patterns how often you should clean it. We don't do a lot of baking, and our oven stays clean for quite a while. Therefore, my preference is to clean it soon after the holidays. There's usually enough accumulated grime in the oven at that point to warrant running the self-cleaning cycle. 3. Dishwasher pods are more effective than dishwasher powder. Fact I've fought this, and I've not been a -

Perimeter Vent Hoods
Perimetric Ventilation A New Way of Venting Cooking creates smoke, odors, and airborne particulates. Vent hoods are needed to remove all this from the kitchen. For the most part, vent hoods do this with fans that pull the air from over the range or cooktop into the hood, through filters, and exhaust the air out. In the last few years, some hood suppliers have been using a perimeter suction system. Quite simply, rather than pull the air through large openings under the hood, the perimeter system creates suction by reducing the size of the openings to slits around the perimeter of the hood. Here are some of the appliance and vent hood companies now offering perimeter vent hoods: Whirlpool Whirlpool has recently introduced a chimney-style hood featuring perimeter venting with this claim: Perimetric venting technology concentrates kitchen hood suction to targeted zones on the cooktop while also reducing noise, an important feature considering that this hood has a powerful 400 CFM fan. The hood can provide even more noise reduction with the optional attic mounted in-line fan. Jenn-Air Jenn-Air was an early-adopter of the perimetric venting system with it's high fashion picture frame wall-mounted vent hood. It can be a nice focal point in the kitchen, and provides a powerful 600 cfm blower which is ideal as an accompaniment to one of Jenn-Air's powerful cooktops or ranges. Elica Speaking of fashion statements, Elica's Mini OM hood has perimeter ventilation which draws air through a narrow channel around the circular face -

2 New Ranges from Jenn-Air
Downdraft and Center Burner Models DebutA Quick Look at 2015 Jenn-Air RangesWe thought 2014 was the year of the slide-in range for Jenn-Air with their new full-depth slide-in ranges that seem to double as freestanding ranges. But new range products continue as Jenn-Air begins 2015 with a 5 burner gas range sporting a center oval burner with a high-powered 19,000 btu dual-stacked power burner. Also, Jenn-Air is launching a new 30" dual-fuel downdraft range that accepts an optional duct-free kit for the most flexibility available for anywhere venting. We really like the look of these ranges, and the fit is impressive also. The new Jenn-Air ranges could be considered slide-in ranges that work as freestanding ranges or vice versa. Since they are full-depth ranges with front controls, no added backsplash or trim is needed.JGS1450D - Jenn-Air 30" Gas RangeWith brass burners including the 19,000 btu dual-stacked burner, this range adds a new center oval burner with an included die-cast griddle. Even though it has a giant 6.5 cu. ft. oven, there is an additional baking drawer underneath that can also be used to proof bread, or as a plate warmer. JDS1750E - Jenn-Air 30" Dual-Fuel Downdraft RangeJenn-Air is the expert in downdraft venting, and this range can be used as a conventional downdraft, or with an optional kit the range can be converted to duct-free operation. But wait...there's more! The new Jenn-air downdraft range comes with a powerful 17,000 BTU Dual-Stacked burner and an extra large 6.2 Cu. ft. oven. -

New Professional Home Appliances Updated
Pro-Style® Cooking Appliances are Changing The Pro-Look Gets a Sleek Update As professional looking appliances have gained popularity in luxury kitchens, they have often been mixed with sleek flush European style appliances. A Bosch or Asko dishwasher featuring a flush matching cabinet panel disappears into the cabinetry while nearby there is a Sub-Zero integrated built-in refrigerator with hidden hinges and door panels that match the adjacent cabinets. They're invisible as appliances and fit right in to the wall. Though it's not possible to do this with cooking appliances, manufacturers have made their cooktops and ranges much more sleek and contemporary-looking. This has become particularly noticeable recently, as even Professional Style appliances have become more flush, but still keep their Pro heritage. Check out the three entries below from Jenn-Air, Wolf, and Miele. Jenn-Air Jenn-Air's new 30" and 36" Pro-Style® cooktops have undergone a complete redesign. Not only have they added more power and new brass burners, but the surface of the cooktop itself is as near to flush as you can get without being inset into the counter. The heavy duty knobs still have a Pro look and feel, but they are somewhat less obtrusive. By the way, the term Pro-Style® is a registered Jenn-Air trademark. Wolf Wolf's new "M" Series Professional Oven still sports their signature red knobs, but also has touch electronic controls that work in conjunction with the knobs. Wolf has worked their magic by producing a jumbo oven with twin convection fans, yet it all fits -

How Your Dishwasher Works
3 Ways Dishwashers Get Your Dishes CleanThere are three processes that contribute to your dishwasher getting your dishes clean. They are: Mechanical, Thermal, and Chemical actions. These processes work together to assure you the best possible cleaning results that will make your dishes shine.MechanicalThe motor and pump of the dishwasher force water through the holes in the spinning spray arms, creating powerful streams of water that peel stuck on food particles from your bowls, dishes, glasses, pots, pans, and silverware. Dishwasher insulation, and quiet, smooth-running motors and pumps enable your dishwasher to powerfully scrub your dishes with a minimum of noise.ThermalDepending on the cycle selected, water is heated to 120-140 degrees (even more for a sani-cycle). Hot water not only breaks down the detergent (see below), it also helps loosen and remove food particles from the dishes, and carries the debris through a filter and down the drain. During the rinse cycle, fresh, clean water leaves your dishes sparkling. If selected, an NSF sanitizing cycle adds more heat; 155-160 degrees for a prescribed time. A drying cycle, usually heat assisted, finishes the job. ChemicalDetergent, and rinse agent are released into the dishwasher at the proper times in the wash or rinse cycles to mix with the hot water. The hot water and detergent mix together enabling the water to "scrub" stuck on food particles from the dishes, glasses, and silverware. In addition, the detergent helps suspend the dirt in the water so that it does not redeposit on the dishes, -

Coming Soon - New Professional Style Appliances
Surprising New Pro-Look Appliances from Frigidaire See them Soon at Universal Appliance and Kitchen Center One big surprise at the 2015 Design and Construction Week (KBIS/IBS) was the "pre-launch" of a new line of professional style appliances by Electrolux's Frigidaire brand. The look is definitely "pro-style". It's much more than we've seen in previous attempts at professional looking appliances by entry level mass brands. From a design perspective, we're predicting that this is going to be a home run. The industry could really use some attractive professional looking appliances in the mass brand categories. However, as always, consumers are the ones who make any new product launch a failure or a success. Pricing and features are key as Electrolux will need to keep the Frigidaire brand properly aligned with the other brands in their portfolio. Ranges debut first with retails from $1599 to $2699. The new Frigidaire Professional dishwasher is slated for a $1099 retail price, and has a 30 minute quick wash cycle. The Frigidaire Professional French-door refrigerator has all the sex appeal you'd expect in a free-standing pro-look model including the bulky tubular stainless handles you might find on a big built-in pro refrigerator, at a fraction of the price. The retail on this refrigerator will range from $3199 to $3499. All this means that you could outfit a kitchen with new Frigidaire Professional appliances (range, dishwasher, and refrigerator) for a bit less than $6K, or as much as $7.3K. As a nice bonus, all these appliances will -

Getting Your Dishes Clean
3 Myths About Dishwashers Full Dishwashers Clean Best Not true. Dishes need some separation from one another. Crowded dishwasher racks are likely to have dishes or bowls nested inside one another making it impossible for the detergent, and spray action to get inside to "scrub" the dirty dish or bowl. Fill your dishwasher, but make sure the dishes don't snug up against each other. Using Dishwashers Sparingly Extends their Lifespan. Not really. Dishwashers have seals that need to be moist. If they stay dry for long periods of time they can dry and crack. When the seal doesn't work, you may experience water leaks. The repair is expensive. In fact, if you have a winter or summer home with a dishwasher, you should pour a cup of vinegar in the dishwasher when you are going to be gone for the season in order to keep the seals moist. Dishwashers run just fine with cold water. In most parts of the country unheated tap water is about 60 degrees (varies some with climates). At this temperature, the water isn't even capable of breaking down the detergent. But your water heater will boost the temperature. A typical dishwasher might look for a minumum temperature of the incoming hot water to be about 120 degrees. Then the dishwasher will turn on its internal heater to boost the water temperature even more. A sani-cycle might boost the temperature to 160 degrees or higher. NSF requires a a combination of a certain minimum temperature for
