Kitchen Remodeling Tips #2
Kitchen Island Ideas What can you do with a kitchen island? We're appliance guys. Mostly, we like kitchen islands that provide space to build in kitchen appliances. We like islands with shelves built-in, because there's no such thing as a good place to put a microwave oven on a kitchen counter. We like them even more if we can also put a built-in oven nearby. By the way, both of these ideas make the appliance accessible, and can be part of a thoughtful universal design. We love slide-in ranges. Several appliance manufacturers have recently introduced new slide-in range models. Slide-in ranges work very well in islands. Make sure that you plan for ventilation. Let's concede that islands can serve purposes other than provide room for our precious appliances. This island has a butcher block countertop. Great for food prep. Speaking of food prep, an island sink can be a big help if food preparation is a primary function of the island. At the other extreme, this table in the kitchen is great for meals, and family gatherings, but not so much to chop lettuce on. Here's an island that is really multi-purpose. Sink, appliances, and bar stools that are convenient for an informal meal, or to just visit and nosh. From the above, you can see that kitchen islands can be multi-function. For appliances and plumbing fixtures for your island, count on the experts at Universal Appliance and Kitchen Center for the best availability and lowest prices. -

Smarter Appliances in 2015
Time to Get Smart Appliances? The Consumer Electronic Show (CES), and the Design and Construction Week (IBS + KBIS) are all being held this month in Las Vegas. New "smart" appliances are sure to be shown at each venue. What's a "smart" appliance? Maybe not what you think. When the word "smart" is prepended to the word appliance, it usually means that the appliance connects remotely to a device such as a smartphone to allow the device to communicate with the appliance and vice versa. So far, the appeal of smart appliances has been limited. Most of the very early smart appliances didn't do much. So you can control the appliance from your easy chair or maybe even from your car. Not exciting. But much more is on the way. For example, new smart refrigerators can send you a text message to tell you that you left the refrigerator door open. I'm not going to rush out of the house just to buy a new smart appliance...BUT if I'm buying a new appliance, and I can get one with smart capabilities, I won't laugh it off. If my new refrigerator can send me a note telling me that the power to my refrigerator has gone off, I want that! Here are just a few new developments in smart appliances coming soon: GE Currently GE makes smart wall ovens that allow you to pre-heat your oven when you’re on your way home. They're now adding smart appliances including a French door -

Great Solutions for Small Kitchens
Designs and Ideas for Small Kitchen Spaces How to get by when you don't have room. *Designer Joanna Simmons suggests that if you have a tiny kitchen space, blow out the ceiling to create some volume. A skylight like the one pictured below might also help. I also really like the idea of pull-outs such as a cutting board or a drop-down table to create an instant eating area. Another idea is taller upper cabinets for extra storage if ceiling space allows. Depending on your cooking needs, forget the standard 30" range and consider a 24" or even 20" range. Some urban folks, rarely cook at home. You might consider a simple 2 burner cooktop supplemented by a convection microwave, or even better one of the new steam/convection ovens. There are lots of choices for built-in appliances that fit in a 24" cabinet. Creative lighting will help the room look more spacious. Consider under cabinet lighting. LED's give you a lot of light and take up little room. Of course, white or other light colors can make a room look bigger, and even small windows and skylights for natural light help enormously. If you can get by with an undercounter refrigerator, here's one from Danby that has a separate freezer compartment. Perhaps width, not height is the issue. Here's a Liebherr refrigerator that's a tall 79 inches in height, but only 24 inches wide. It's surprising how true the saying is "Necessity is the mother of invention." For more ideas -

2014 Kitchens
3 Kitchen Trends in 2014 Here's what has been trending in kitchen design: Contrast A little more than a decade ago appliance manufacturers called it white-on-white. White appliances with chrome trim had been de rigueur for years, so the early movement to solid white was a big deal in the beginning of the last decade. Kitchen cabinets, countertops, sinks and even faucets contributed to the solid white kitchen. Even today, an all-white kitchen is not unusual or out of place. However, for several years, we've seen the ever popular white kitchen complemented with contrasting yet subdued colors, in particular grey. Now, contrast is becoming more bold with black showing up in islands and base cabinets, stainless steel sinks, and chrome, or even gold faucets. Color Along with non-white cabinets, sinks, and faucets, 2014 saw more solid contrasting colors on kitchen walls not just gray or black, but also bright colors and pastel shades. Thanks to specialty appliance manufacturers such as Smeg, BlueStar, Bertazzoni, and even Viking, many appliance color options are now available even though stainless steel continues to dominate. Changes in upper cabinets and islands. Upper cabinets are sometimes being replaced by shelves, and occasionally disappearing entirely. See the limited use of upper wall cabinets in the photo above. Islands have been around for a long time, but we're seeing more use of islands for seating, and even tables and chairs as substitutes for islands. What can we expect in 2015? There will be more of the same as -
