More News From KBIS (Kitchen & Bath International Show) 2012 - Danze
Danze's new showerhead ensures a high-performing shower even at lower flow rates. Using a technology that injects air directly into the showerhead “engine,” the shower experience is improved by a softened spray that traps air bubbles in the water stream. Offering increased water velocity and spray intensity, the technology is being introduced on two showerheads, the Danze 200 and Danze 250, which are available in multiple versions to accommodate varied flow rates (1.5 gpm, 1.75 gpm, 2.0 gpm and 2.5 gpm). News From KBIS (Kitchen & Bath International Show) 2012 - Franke
Celebrating 100 years, Franke introduces the Centennial sink, the company’s first sink system conceived and designed from start to finish in the United States. The shape of the sink is designed to evoke sterling silver service pieces with its curved perimeter tapering to an ample-sized bowl. Optional accessories include heavy-duty bottom and top grids and a Iroko wood cutting board with a symmetrical shape, making it reversible for left- or right-hand use. Franke is also planning to release a coordinating Centennial faucet. Smart Appliances are spreading.
> SubZero and Wolf Appliance Co. has announced the availablity of the Smart Appliance App and Module engineered by Card Access to integrate into Control4® wireless home control systems for its appliances. "Incorporating technology within our products reinforces our commitment to improving our customers' ownership experience," said Michele Bedard, vice president of marketing for Sub-Zero and Wolf. The Smart Appliance App provides an alert system that allows meals to be monitored from anywhere in the home. The system's functions include notifications of pre-heat and timer completion, current oven temperature, and knowing when meals are finished cooking based on the internal temperature probe's reading. System alerts can notify homeowners when the refrigerator door has been left open, helping to prevent temperature variances that lead to food spoilage. The app can also maximize energy efficiency by lowering the refrigerator's power consumption at different times of day. Specific lifestyle needs and preferences such as increasing ice production prior to entertaining, saving energy in vacation mode and choosing the Sabbath mode for religious observances can also be met by the software. An additional benefit of the technology is an enhanced service experience. General service requests can be sent directly to Wolf and Sub-Zero's certified service professionals through the Control4 system, leading to quicker diagnosis and resolution of problems. The Galley Kitchen - Choices Abound
The term galley kitchen refers to kitchens located against a single wall or in a corridor. Galley kitchens may connote an economy apartment. However, space limitations don't necessarily dictate style, perfomance, or quality in a kitchen remodel. A galley kitchen in a home might have a wall with a sink, dishwasher, freestanding range, and micro-hood located in a row as in the picture above. It might also feature a cooktop with an oven below and a built-in or counter-depth refrigerator as in the first picture below. Or a luxury galley kitchen could include a pro range with a custom hood enclosure and integrated built-in refrigerator with cabinet panels. The constraints are not entry level, mid-market, or luxury. Just as in any kitchen it's a matter of what works where, fits your budget, and is best for your home value and kitchen needs. Consult your design expert and then talk to the appliance experts at Universal Appliance and Kitchen Center. Save Money and Save the Earth
Sunday April 22nd is Earth Day. It's been around for 42 years - Earth day, that is. The Earth has been around for just a bit longer. Here are a few ideas to help you live green and celebrate Earth Day. 1. Replace your incandescent light bulbs with compact florescent light bulbs (CFL). The good ones are E-Star rated, will run cool, use less electricity, and last longer even though they cost more. 2. Use your ceiling fans and floor fans, before resorting to AC. There are lots of warm days that aren't scorchers. You can save energy and money by keeping the AC off on warm days. 3. Replace and repair worn out weather stripping. You may be surprised to find out how much air conditioned are you are allowing to escape. 4. Use cold water to do your wash. Experts say that this alone could save enough energy to run your home for two weeks. 5. Replace those old appliances. Appliance life expectancies aren't much longer than 15 years, and if over 10 years old they're likely to be energy hogs. Do the math on appliances nearing the end of their useful life. You're likely to find that by amortizing the energy savings over the expected life you're better off buying new appliances. Make a good fit.
Appliances need to "fit" your home in more than one way. Sure the dimensions must be right, but appliances must also be "right" for your house in value perception. If you live in a mansion in a luxury gated community, you wouldn't show off a 17 cu. ft. top freezer mass brand refrigerator (Frigidaire, Amana, Hotpoint) in your gourmet kitchen. On the other hand, if you have an entry level production home, you probably should not be installing a $12,000 built-in refrigerator (SubZero, Miele, Gaggenau) in a galley kitchen. Admittedly, these are extreme examples. If the budget allows, consider "taking it up a notch" on your appliances. Let your kitchen sell your house by being the best available when compared to other homes in the same price range, but do not let your kitchen far exceed the kitchens in comparable homes or you will not get a return on your investment. Worse yet, is the luxury home with cheap looking appliances and brands that don't fit with high end buyer expectations. Real estate experts say installing bargain basement appliances in a luxury home, can greatly reduce the value of the home and make it hard to sell. Fortunately, Universal Appliance and Kitchen Center carries most major brands from economy mass brands to the most esoteric luxury appliances.
