How Long Do Appliances Last?
When should I replace a major appliance? Seems like an easy question to answer doesn't it? There is a chart below that shows the average life of appliances, but there really is much more that you should know, to decide if it is time for you to replace an appliance. The chart below shows the average life of appliances by category. So, if a refrigerator has an average life span of 13 years that means that some refrigerators last 20 years or more and others don't last past 5 years. There are many reasons for this. Some users maintain their appliances better than others. When was the last time you brushed the dust off your refrigerator condenser coils? Some owners simply use their appliances more often than others. Some dishwashers get used nearly every day, and others only once a week. Some brands and appliance models are built to last longer. Research your purchase to get the most durable appliance you can. There is a law of averages at work here. There is no way you can tell for sure whether any individual appliance will break down before or after its average life expectancy date. Of course, sometimes perfectly good refrigerators get "retired" because homeowners want to replace them with the latest and greatest models. Maybe they can justify a new purchase by moving the old unit up to their cabin, or give it to a son or daughter who is just starting -

Ten Reasons for a Labor Day Celebration
Can you believe it's here already? Labor Day. What does Labor Day mean to you?A celebration of the achievements and contributions of American workers - Oregon was the first state to recognize Labor Day as a Holiday in 1887. It wasn't until 1894 that Labor Day became a U.S. Holiday. #1 above is the official reason for the Labor Day holiday, and the other nine reasons below are merely additional reasons to celebrate.A day off work - Nobody can object to having a day off work at the end of summer. While we have roughly the same amount of holidays as say our brethern in the U.K., they have a mandatory 20 days of vacation or more than twice the vacation time that the average worker enjoys in the U.S.A three day holiday - The three day (Monday) holiday has become a ritual due to the Uniform Monday Holiday Act of 1968 which applies to all Federal Holidays except for New Years, Independence Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.A time for barbecues, picnics, and family gatherings - It would seem odd for most American's to celebrate Labor Day without some form of barbecue, picnic, or family gathering. Indeed, this appears to be part of the original Labor Day charter which called for a parade followed by a festival for workers and their families. The end of summer - It seems like a good marker for the end of summer. Vacations are over. Except -

Choosing an Appliance Brand
Getting ready to purchase new appliances and confused about where to begin? How about settling on a brand first? This can be an easy way to narrow the field and to make sure that you get a product that suites your lifestyle and your budget.First let's consider what a brand really is and what it means. Unfortunately, the word brand has different meanings to different people and in different circumstances. For example, we often associate a brand with its logo. We also sometimes confuse a brand with its generic equivalent. We think of the word BandAid as the same as a bandage, even though it is only one brand of bandage, or we ask for a Kleenex instead of a tissue. Basically, a brand tells the unique story of a product or company. It defines the product or company. Marketers like to say that a brand is the company or organization's specific "promise".How does that help us in buying appliances? When you select the appliances for your home, you are looking for a set of attributes that most fit your needs that include product features, quality, price, warranty, etc. Each brand will represent a collection of those attributes.Appliance manufacturers tend to position themselves across a spectrum of these attributes and that makes it much easier for customers to narrow their section. For example, if we were looking at refrigerators strictly for price you would find the Chinese brand Haier at one end of the price -

A Primer on Convection Cooking
What you should know about convection cooking. If you have a convection range or oven and don't use it, or if you are considering a new range or oven here are the essential facts you should know. Here's how convection works - the theory behind convection cooking. Convection ovens rapidly move hot air past food making it possible to cook better, faster, and at a lower temperature. They are fan operated to force the hot air over and around the food, and typically have separate convection elements surrounding the fans to assist in providing heat. Most residential convection ovens are selective use. This means that users can choose when to use convection and when not to use convection. Here are the important advantages and disadvantages of convection cooking.Advantages Using convection for roasting reduces cooking time by as much as 25%.Using convection for baking provides consistent results cooking at a lower temperature for the same amount of time.Because of the consistent temperature throughout the oven cavity, using convection allows for cooking on all the racks at the same time. Cookies baked on the top rack will come out exactly the same as cookies baked on the bottom rack.Cooking with convection will provide superior results. Roasts will have a dark caramelized exterior, and remain juicy and tender inside. Baked goods will brown evenly and stay moist.Disadvantages Convection cooking may require adapting standard recipes to achieve proper results. There is no benefit to using convection in casserole dishes or other containers that do -
