3 Bad Ideas for Major Appliances
Avoid These 3 Mistakes When Buying AppliancesThey see a lot of customers every day at Universal Appliance and Kitchen Center, and most purchases are straightforward. But, once in a while there are just situations where appliance applications and usages don't quite make sense. Here are 3 of them:1. Don't buy an Energy Star refrigerator and then hook up the old energy wasting refrigerator in the garage. One of the major differences between refrigerators built today and those that date back to the 90's or before is energy usage. Many Energy Star refrigerators today will use about the same amount of energy as a light bulb. It's really remarkable just how much electricity you're saving with that new refrigerator. Why then would you buy a new energy efficient refrigerator and then take that 20 year old energy hog refrigerator and plug it in in your garage where it will run day and night? The old refrigerator needs to be taken out of service, and the refrigerant needs to be properly discharged from the unit and recycled. Ask your salesperson at Universal Appliance and Kitchen Center (UAKC) about this.2. Don't buy a new dishwasher with a protruding handle for a corner location. The adjacent cabinet drawer will not open.Locating a dishwasher in a corner cabinet. is generally a bad idea. Even worse is putting a dishwasher with a handle in a corner location so that the handle prevents the -

Getting Cooktops and Ovens that Fit
Finding a cooktop or oven that fits your cutoutUniversal Appliance and Kitchen Center is Headquarters for Built-In AppliancesIf you're remodeling an older home, and using existing countertops and cabinets, you may encounter difficulty finding just the right size cooktop or wall oven to replace the existing appliance. In Southern California there are many nice homes in mature neighborhoods that could use an appliance update. However, in some cases there are some older appliances that need replacing, but may take a bit of work finding replacement models that fit. Universal Appliance and Kitchen Center (UAKC) can help. Here are some suggestions for odd sized ovens and cookotps.Gas Double Wall Ovens24" wide double gas ovens are common in some neighborhoods. While 24" cutouts are not used much in new construction these days, it does appear that both Maytag and Frigidaire still make 24" double gas wall ovens. First measure your existing appliance dimensions. Then check with the folks at Universal Appliance and Kitchen Center (UAKC) to review your options.Believe it or not, there were some 30" wall ovens that required a 33" cabinet. If you are replacing one of these wall ovens, you may find that another 30" wall oven will be too small for the cutout. In this case, you'd need a filler or trim kit of some kind.Trim KitsSpeaking of trim kits, Micro-Trim makes trim kits specifically for ovens, microwave ovens, and cooktops. They may prove to be indispensable if you can't find -

Appliance Manufacturer Rebates and Offers
Rebates Now Available at Universal Appliance and Kitchen Center There was a time...back in the 80's when there was no such thing as an appliance rebate. Apparently, manufacturer rebates first began to appear in retail stores such as grocers as a variation on coupons. Instead of redeeming coupons at the grocer, consumers had to mail them in with proof of purchase. Eventually, rebates spread to other businesses and today they are a major part of appliance retailing. GE was an early adopter of rebate promotions to encourage buyers to purchase GE appliances. click on the photo below for details: Manufacturers use rebates as part of their overall marketing program to encourage consumers to buy their brand, but just as importantly to buy a specific appliance model or even a complete kitchen appliance package. For a long time, rebates were limited to the popular mass brands such as Frigidaire, GE, and Whirlpool. Luxury brands Sub Zero Wolf, Viking, and others eschewed rebates in the beginning, but eventually succumbed to using rebates as a promotional tactic. click on the photo below for details: It's good to know, however, that rebates DO come and go. All rebate programs are going to have beginning dates and expiration dates. Rebates might last for a year, but they also might be good only for a few days. It's always going to be a good idea to check with the experts at Universal Appliance and Kitchen Center to find out what rebates are available when you are -

KBIS and IBS to Showcase New Appliances and Plumbing Fixtures
International Builders Show andKitchen And Bath Industry Show On Feb. 3-6, 2014 the International Builders Show (IBS) and the Kitchen and Bath Industry Show (KBIS) for the first time will be co-locating their shows at the Las Vegas Convention Center. Product lines that will be showcased include many of the major appliance and plumbing fixture brands that you can find at Universal Appliance and Kitchen Center (UAKC). Appliance brands participating at the show include Frigidaire, Electrolux, BSH (Bosch, Thermador, and Gaggenau), Viking, Dacor, Liebherr, and others. Plumbing lines such as Brizo, KWC, Toto, Everpure, and many more will also exhibit. Trade shows allow manufacturers to display their products to the builders, contractors, dealers, distributors, designers, and remodelers who purchase and use their products. Manufacturers often show new products to get opinions and recommendations from industry veterans. The shows also provide an annual opportunity for customers to meet with suppliers, discuss concerns, and plan the year ahead. Just to give you an idea, induction cooking has been previewed at these shows for at least 10-15 years. Now, it is finally a reality with nearly all cooking product manufacturers offering some induction cooktops and/or ranges. Similarly, various speed cooking products have been shown over the years with mixed success. Both GE and Whirlpool have versions (Advantium and Velos) on the market now, but Thermador's Jet Impingement system shown in the early 2000's never launched. What will we see this year? Odds are there will be -

Internet Enabled Appliances in 2014
Smart Appliances at CES Internet enabled appliances available today at UAKC LG Home Chat at CES 2014 They've got an APP for that! Each year appliance manufacturer's seem to use the January CES (Consumer Electronics Show) as a launchpad for their latest Jetson Style innovation. This year is no exception. LG Home Chat allows users to manage their connected appliances and devices with an SMS interface -- you'll literally be able to send your refrigerator, washing machine, robot vacuum, or other smart appliance a command or question via text message, then get a response. It pays to remember that more than a decade ago, it was at the CES that LG launched its $10,000 DIOS internet enabled refrigerator which is no longer being made, and Sun Microsystem's Scott McNealy showed a Whirlpool refrigerator paired with a tablet PC that never made it to market. Nevertheless, appliance manufacturer's are again sticking their toes into the internet waters hoping that they will not once again receive a chilly response. This time the high tech appliances don't just occupy "dream" space, but are a real part of their appliance lineup. Dacor Discovery iQ DYO230 Last year Dacor introduced it's internet connected Discovery IQ Oven in a single and double oven version. This week at the CES, Dacor unveiled a similarly enabled 6 burner range with an oven featuring the same Android powered OS. Here's the wall oven along with a writeup from Dacor highlighting its -

Placement of a Microwave Oven
Where do you locate a microwave? Adding a microwave to an existing kitchen can be a daunting task. There are four places where microwave ovens are likely to be found in a kitchen, and there are advantages and disadvantages to each option. Here is the list of each choice and a discussion of their respective benefits. Feel free to contact the experts at Universal Appliance and Kitchen Center for specific models and dimensions. Countertop Placing a microwave oven on a countertop is an obvious choice, and in the early years this is all way microwave ovens were located. The big, hefty Amana Radarange is iconic of this era. Countertop microwaves are convenient and are relatively inexpensive. Nevertheless, this is usually an undesirable solution because the microwave takes up valuable counterspace.Over-the-range GE invented the O-T-R micro-hood combination back in the 70's. The O-T-R microwave has become commonplace and often a standard feature in new homes. While the micro-hood gets the microwave off the countertop, the eye-level location is not ergonomically sound, and the ventilation system is generally considered inferior.Built-In to the cabinets This can be an ideal solution. A microwave oven in the wall located at the perfect height is going to be a homemaker's delight. However, there can be difficulties. Upper cabinets are generally only 12" deep and will only accommodate a very small microwave oven. This means that there must be a full depth -
