Beware of your Fabric Softener
4 Fabrics to Keep Away From Fabric Softener Shared from Good Housekeeping Most of us think fabric softeners are good for ALL fabrics. Not so. Though we all know fabric softeners will...well, make fabrics soft. Perhaps, we're not aware that fabric softener should not be used on all materials. Here's a list from *Good Housekeeping: 1. Microfiber I just love microfiber, but I had no idea that using fabric softener when microfiber is in the wash could remove the effectiveness and the durability of the microfibers. 2. Athletic Sportswear Evidently, athletic gear frequently has "wicking technology" that will absorb sweat when you are exercising and help keep you cool. However, the coating that fabric softener leaves on your athletic wear will not allow "wicking" to occur, thus eliminating the absorption and cooling benefit of your athletic clothing. 3. Flame-Retardant Clothing Kids' sleepwear is required by law to be flame-resistant, but washing flame-resistant sleepwear with fabric softener actually makes them MORE flammable. 4. Towels How nice is it to dry off with a nice, warm soft towel? Nice, huh? But, when you use liquid fabric softener and dryer sheets, you'll be reducing the moisture absorption factor of terry cloth (and similar fluffy fabrics). Appreciate this content? When is the best time to buy appliances?
Should You Wait for Black Friday?Shop Early at Universal Appliance and Kitchen CenterHere's a recommendation. Suppose you have a need for an appliance. Your existing appliance isn't working or you're moving next week and have to get appliances for your new place. By all means don't wait. Call or visit Universal Appliance and Kitchen Center (UAKC) today. It just doesn't make sense to postpone getting an appliance that you need now, for the off chance that you'll find the exact product that suits your needs on sale during Black Friday. The experts at UAKC can certainly point you in the right direction today. Also, if you have already settled on the brand and model numbers that you want, don't hesitate. Head over to UAKC and get the best deal. Waiting just doesn't make sense. Black Friday Specials are just that - Specials. It's highly unlikely that the carefully selected specific models you've chosen from thousands of possibilities will magically appear as Black Friday Specials. For example, KitchenAid makes great dishwashers, but they have LOTS of models. If the one below just happened to be the one you've selected, Bravo! But, if you're stuck on a different feature set, are you going to settle for a model that you don't want just because it is a Black Friday Special? On the other hand, if you are an opportunistic buyer willing to jump for a deal when you see it, and don't mind waiting a couple of weeks, it probably won't hurt to wait -

Energy Star Appliance News
New FIRST Energy Star DryersGet these new dryers at Universal Appliance and Kitchen CenterEnergy Star® appliances have been around for decades. Why are we just now getting electric dryers with Energy Star® ratings? The reasoning for not having Energy Star® rated dryers has always been that dryers were all about the same when it came to energy usage. Evidently, that has changed. The advanced moisture sensors that are available these days can give dryers equipped with this technology an edge over those using traditional thermostats to cycle on and off.Whirlpool has jumped on this development, and now has the first ENERGY STAR® dryers on the market. Below is what Whirlpool has to say about their new dryers, and a list of the qualified models:SAVE WITH THE Industry’s first ENERGY STAR® certified dryers. As the first appliance manufacturer to offer electric dryers with ENERGY STAR® certification, Whirlpool Corporation's energy efficient dryers now offer more opportunity to save on energy bills. These models exceed government efficiency standards by over 20%. Compact Undercounter Laundry Equipment
Undercounter washers and dryers Choose from top brands at Universal Appliance and Kitchen Center As part of our series on undercounter appliances, today we're covering washers and dryers designed for installation in a base cabinet. Here in the U.S., we have separate laundry rooms, designed to accommodate full-sized top loading or front loading washers and dryers. They overwhelmingly are one of the big U.S. brands such as GE, Maytag, or Whirlpool or from one of the Korean brands, LG or Samsung. However, some of the top brands in undercounter laundry equipment are European names. Asko, Bosch, and Miele don't even compete in the large capacity U.S. laundry market, but they are big names in 24" wide washers and dryers that fit underneath a counter (though GE, Whirlpool, and Frigidaire also have models at the low end of this market). Since most washers sold in Europe are designed to fit in a 60 cm (24") base cabinet in the kitchen, this appliance category falls into the wheelhouse of the European brands. They do a great job of washing in less time than their U.S. counterparts and are very energy efficient. Their compact size not only means that they can be located in tight spaces, they are accessible and perfect to use for universal design. Bosch Fit speed and style just about anywhere. With their sleek design, our matching Bosch 24" laundry units offer best in class installation. Stack them in a closet or install -

Getting Your Appliances Ready for Vacation
Before You Leave on VacationAppliance Preparation TipsWe've all heard the saying, "If anything can go wrong - it will." We might amend that to say, "If anything can go wrong - it will go wrong when you are on vacation!" Here are some things you can do before you go on vacation to make sure that your appliances are not going to act up while you're away.RefrigeratorSome refrigerators have a "vacation" mode so if you're heading out on vacation take a second to engage the vacation mode setting. Also, push up the actuator arm on the icemaker to turn it off.Of course, you need to get rid of any food that could spoil while you're gone, but you don't want to leave the refrigerator empty. Fill some containers with water and put them in the refrigerator. A refrigerator runs much more efficiently when there is something in it. That's also true for the freezer.DishwasherThere's really not much you need to do for your dishwasher. If you're going to be gone for more than a couple weeks it's a good idea to pour a cup of vinegar in the bottom of the dishwasher to keep the seal moist. Leave the dishwasher door ajar. Range or OvenDon't worry about it.Washer and DryerBe sure to leave both the washer and dryer doors open a crack so that they don't get musty while you're away. Unplug both the washer and dryer, and turn off the gas supply if your dryer is gas. Disconnect the -

Buying a Clothes Dryer
When to buy a clothes dryer1. When Purchasing a Washing Machine: There is no question that more dryers are purchased in connection with washer purchases than at any other time. It makes sense to have a matching dryer to go with your washer. So, it's not a surprise that around sixty percent of laundry buyers choose a matching laundry pair. A matching dryer will have the right capacity to handle a full load of clothes from the washer. Having this kind of throughput is important. When you're washing multiple loads of clothes it's nice to have the dryer available for use when the clothes are done washing. And, it sure perks up the laundry room to have a matching washer/dryer pair. 2. When you can save money:Washer/Dryer pairs are often promoted as sets. If you can get a great deal on the pair, take advantage of the savings. Ask the experts at Universal Appliance and Kitchen Center for any manufacturer specials on laundry pairs. 3. When the old dryer breaks down: Assuming "old" means 12-15 years old or more, if your dryer breaks down, there's a good chance the repair bill will exceed the value of your dryer. Time for a visit to Universal Appliance and Kitchen Center. 4. When switching from gas to electric or vice versa: If you move into a house with only a 240v receptacle for an electric dryer and you bring a -

At Universal Appliance and Kitchen Center (UAKC) it wouldn't be unusual for a customer to get $2,000 or even more from Viking, Sub Zero, or Thermador on a luxury kitchen appliance package. The appliances can easily cost $25,000 or more. However, earning up to $2000 in rebates on a GE kitchen package is really quite a special offer. Considering that most appliance rebates among the popular brands such as GE, Frigidaire, and Whirlpool are in the $50 to $100 range, earning up to $2000 on GE appliances is a really good deal. For example, purchasing an upscale KitchenAid dishwasher, range, microwave, and refrigerator under their current rebate offer will on average work out to $500. What all of this amounts to is that if you're shopping for appliances in the popular/mid-level brand category you should take a hard look at GE, GE Profile, or GE Cafe for pricing and rebate savings. These are great brands -

Appliance Features
Get the right features on your new appliancesAvoid costly mistakes in selecting plumbing fixtures and appliances Customers sometimes ask for basic appliances with no bells and whistles. However, it's important to be specific. Here's an example: After purchasing a "basic" dryer from one of the big box home improvement stores, this customer wrote:...no alarm to tell you when it is finished, had nothing but wrinkled cloths from day one because of this. Why would anyone build a dryer without an alarm is beyond me, not like you can stand next to it until it is done so clothes don't wrinkle."The truth is that the difference between a $299 dishwasher and a $399 dishwasher is not just $100. There are likely to be very important features missing on the entry level model such as delay start, heavy wash, or a sani-cycle. The time to find out about the features or bells and whistles on your appliance is before you purchase. If you wait until after your gas range has been in the home and used for a couple of weeks before you discover that you do not have a low simmer setting, it's too late. Here are some basic tips on getting the right features on appliances: Avoid "loss leaders". There's nothing wrong with buying an appliance that is advertised at a good price, but when you see something that is priced way below the market price for a comparable appliance ask the sales associate for an explanation.
