Choosing an Undercounter Trash Compactor
Undercounter Appliances Part 2 - The Trash Compactors Shop Universal Appliance and Kitchen Center for Trash Compactors The trash compactor is a handy appliance that will compact your trash by a factor of 4-6 times. It's a great way to reduce your trash footprint. Obviously, a trash compactor saves space and reduces trips to an outside trash bin. Today's compactors come with advanced features such as deodorizers, child lockouts, and convenient drop down doors for trash removal Trash compactors come in a standard 15" width size (Broan discontinued their 12" models a few years ago), and will fit nicely in standard depth cabinets. Even though they have powerful rams that compress your trash, the 1/3 hp models all work on a standard 120v. circuit. The 3/4 hp models require 220v. circuits. Depending on the brand or model, your trash compactor will have a compaction ratio of 4:1 - 6:1 and compaction force of 2,300 - 3,000 lbs. Below is a list of the compactor brands you can find at Universal Appliance and Kitchen Center. Undercounter Appliances Gaining Popularity
Appliances that Fit Under Your Countertops Visit Universal Appliance and Kitchen Center Not long ago the only appliances placed underneath a counter in most homes were the dishwasher and perhaps a trash compactor. Now, there are a host of appliances configured to fit underneath the counter. In fact, it's hard to think of a major appliance category that does not have products configured to work under a countertop. Universal Appliance and Kitchen Center has a huge selection of appliances from many brands that will fit under your countertop. Among the reasons to install an appliance under a counter, would be not only to save counter space, but also for accessibility. It's also good to remember that the cabinets above your countertop are only 12" deep, not the 24" that most appliances are designed to occupy. Microwave ovens are no longer relegated to the countertop or over the range. Today, microwave oven drawers open and close at the push of a button and are perfect for undercounter installation. In addition, the big kitchen refrigerator is being replaced or at least supplemented with refrigerator and freezer drawers.Sub Zero has recently introduced a host of new undercounter refrigeration appliances that are also designed for living spaces other than the kitchen. The phrase that is being used is "point-of-use" appliances. For example, it might be a good idea to have a refrigerator in a recreation area stocked with snacks and drinks for the kids. Entertainment areas are being equipped -

Side by Side Refrigerators
Choosing a New Side by Side Refrigerator While French door refrigerators seem to be all the rage these days, side by side refrigerator still hold a significant share of refrigerator industry sales. Reasons for customers preferring side by side refrigerators include the better access to the freezer compartments (i.e. no digging to find the ice cream), less critical space used for ice storage, and overall better organization and visibility. Whatever your reason, if a side by side is your choice here are three fundamental choices you need to make. Universal Appliance and Kitchen Center can help you choose the configuration that works best for you. Built-In A built-in side by side will fit flush inside your cabinet space, and could even be "integrated" with matching cabinet panels and hidden hinges. Depending on the brand, size, and features this refrigerator could cost $10,000 or more. Counter depth A counter depth side by side refrigerator is going to fit nearly flush with the countertops (25") not counting the door. While they're not built-in, they're attractive looking, and blend into the surrounding cabinets nicely. Full depth A full or standard depth refrigerator will protrude from the kitchen cabinets. This style refrigerator offers more capacity, but can often be 35" deep or more. Consumers often complain about having to navigate around the refrigerator. As you can see, there are tradeoffs among the 3 basic refrigerator configurations. In addition, you'll need to decide among models featuring dispensers and non-dispenser models. You may also have a -

Many Major Appliances are Made in the U.S.
Where are cooking appliances made? Customers often want to know where an appliance is manufactured. A surprising number of major appliances sold in the U.S. are manufactured here also. Let's take a look at cooking products. Here are where the Big 3 appliance manufacturers in the U.S. (Whirlpool, Electrolux/Frigidaire, and GE) make their ranges, cooktops, and ovens. Whirlpool Corporation also includes Amana, Jenn-Air, KitchenAid, and Maytag brands. They have a large facility (one million sq. ft.) in Cleveland, Tenn. where freestanding and slide-in ranges are built, as well as cooktops and wall ovens. In addition, they also build some ranges in their Tulsa, Oklahoma facility. Headquartered in Benton Harbor, Michigan, Whirlpool is the largest appliance manufacturer in the world. Over 80% of the appliances that Whirlpool sells in the U.S. are manufactured here. Whirlpool claims to employ more U.S. workers than all their competitors combined. Electrolux/Frigidaire has their range factory in Springfield, Tennessee, and has build a new cooktop facility near Memphis. It's worth noting that the Swedish firm Electrolux is the 2nd largest appliance manufacturer in the world, and has a major U.S. presence. GE makes ranges and ovens in their Roper facility in Lafayette, GA. GE also has strong ties to Mabe, a Mexican appliance company that builds GE's gas ranges. In spite of GE's affiliation with Mabe (GE has a 48% stake), GE is a leader in "insourcing", and has been adding appliance manufacturing jobs in the U.S. for several years. In addition, GE is quite proud -

Under Counter Ice Machines and Ice Makers
Choosing an Ice Machine or Ice Maker at UAKC If you find yourself going through more ice than your refrigerator's icemaker can produce, it may be time to consider getting a separate unit to make your ice. Universal Appliance and Kitchen Center (UAKC) has Southern California's best availabilty and lowest prices for undercounter ice machines and icemakers. There are two basic types of ice producing appliances available. Undercounter icemakers work on the same principle as the icemaker in a refrigerator. They are actually downsized freezers that have an icemaker built in. The icemaker consists of a tray that fills with water. The water freezes into cubes, and the icemaker "harvests" the cubes by dumping them into a container in the bottom of the freezer. The process repeats itself until the container fills with ice. Then the icemaker quits making ice until the ice level in the container starts to drop. The ice cubes are kept frozen by a cooling unit in the icemaker. An ice machine has a metal mold or cold plate. Water is continually sprayed upward onto the cold plate and freezes. Contaminants in the water fall off leaving clear ice. Heat is then used to separate the clear cubes from the mold or plate and the cubes fall into the bin below. Unlike an icemaker, an ice machine has no separate cooling unit to keep the ice cubes frozen. The ice machine continues to replenish the ice -

Purchasing a Garbage Disposer
Food Waste Disposers at Universal Appliance and Kitchen Center When shopping for kitchen appliances it is easy to overlook the disposer. Yet, this is an essential appliance for the kitchen. At Universal Appliance and Kitchen Center you can choose from these top brands: Franke, Frigidaire, GE, KitchenAid, and Whirlpool. When buying new or remodeling, a disposer should be part of the kitchen package. Also, whenever you are replacing a dishwasher, it's usually a good idea to replace your disposer at the same time (unless the disposer happens to be quite new). By replacing the disposer along with the dishwasher you can save on a second trip charge, and it is an easy switch out since the plumbing is being worked on at the same time. Disposers have motors of 1/3 hp, 1/2 hp, 3/4 hp, and 1 horsepower. Naturally, the disposers with higher horsepower will cost more. The larger hp disposers are also likely to have larger chambers meaning they will chop up more food quicker. Other features to consider are stainless steel disposer blades and chambers, and anti-jamming capabilities. There are two types of disposer systems - continuous feed and batch feed. A continuous feed disposer will have a separate switch usually located on a nearby wall. In a batch feed disposer, the motor is actuated by a locking cover on the disposer. While continuous feed disposers are by far the most common, some people prefer the safety and convenience of having the disposer only start when the disposer -

Buying a New Dishwasher
Choose the RIGHT Dishwasher for your needs.4 Dishwasher Buying TipsA customer was shopping for a new dishwasher at the big chain home improvement store. A dishwasher priced at $399 was next to another dishwasher priced at $499. He asked the sales associate, "What's the difference?" The orange aproned salesperson replied with a smirk, "A hundred dollars". Funny, but sad. How helpful is that kind of answer when you're investing hundreds of dollars on a product that you hope to have for 10 or more years? The first tip in buying a new dishwasher is to work with appliance specialists. Don't expect to get expert advice on appliances from a salesperson who also sells tools, lumber, lawn and garden supplies, and light bulbs. At Universal Appliance and Kitchen Center (UAKC) you'll receive expert help from appliance professionals. The associates at UAKC are factory trained and have years of appliance sales experience. Assess your needs. Spend some time thinking about what you want in a dishwasher. A person who lives alone, doesn't entertain, and eats most of his or her meals in a restaurant will need a vastly different dishwasher than the head of household for a family of 6 who entertains regularly, serves food on fine china, and uses premium glassware. Consider water consumption and energy savings. A dishwasher with a higher initial cost may in fact have a lower lifetime cost than a cheaper dishwasher that uses more electricity and more water. Compare features and benefits of different models and -

At Universal Appliance and Kitchen Center (UAKC) it wouldn't be unusual for a customer to get $2,000 or even more from Viking, Sub Zero, or Thermador on a luxury kitchen appliance package. The appliances can easily cost $25,000 or more. However, earning up to $2000 in rebates on a GE kitchen package is really quite a special offer. Considering that most appliance rebates among the popular brands such as GE, Frigidaire, and Whirlpool are in the $50 to $100 range, earning up to $2000 on GE appliances is a really good deal. For example, purchasing an upscale KitchenAid dishwasher, range, microwave, and refrigerator under their current rebate offer will on average work out to $500. What all of this amounts to is that if you're shopping for appliances in the popular/mid-level brand category you should take a hard look at GE, GE Profile, or GE Cafe for pricing and rebate savings. These are great brands
