Viking Turbo Chef Oven
New Viking Turbo Chef oven now in production We've written before about Viking's Turbo Chef oven. It's probably the first new technology in speed cooking for the home since the microwave oven. The air impingement technology is used widely in commercial applications by Viking's parent company, Middleby. However, this will be its first *serious launch for home use by a full-line major appliance company. The Viking Turbo Chef oven uses traditional radiant heating, combined with convection, microwave assist, and powerful Airspeed Technology™. Using patented jetplates on the top and bottom of the oven heated air is forced over the food at various speeds helping the food to cook up to 15 times faster than conventional ovens. How does that translate? Well, a 12 lb. turkey will cook in the Turbo Chef in only 42 minutes; 20 spears of asparagus in just 45 seconds. COMMERCIAL PERFORMANCE 7 Speedcook modes: Bake, Roast, Broil, Air-Crisp, Toast, Dehydrate, and Favorites "Favorites" stores your custom recipes Advanced mode for manual adjustments Microwave, defrost, and standard convection bake modes Accompanying the the Turbo Chef upper oven, is a full-featured 3.8cu.ft. self-cleaning convection oven/proofing oven/warming oven. CONVECTION OVEN, PROOFING OVEN, WARMING OVEN 4 heating elements provide uniform cooking– convection, inner broiler, outer broiler, and bake Self-clean function 5 cook modes: Bake, Roast, Broil, Convection Bake, Convection Roast Warming setting Proofing setting Sabbath mode The technology used in Viking's Turbo Chef Oven has been perfected, and in use commercially for years. Locating Your Microwave
Find the right place for your microwave Creative Design in the Kitchen One of a design professional's enduring issues with microwave ovens is where to locate them. Many designers fight the idea of locating the microwave over a range or in an upper cabinet. They argue (correctly in my mind), that it is not ergonomically sound for most homemakers because it is too high, and it's certainly not ADA compliant in an over the range location. One solution is an oven microwave combination. It's certainly doable, but it does require a 24" deep cabinet top to bottom instead of the more common 12" upper cabinet over the counter. However, a microwave above the oven is also likely to put the microwave controls a bit too high, and certainly not ADA compliant or universal design. An option we've discussed before is an under counter installation. The main disadvantage of installing a microwave under the counter is that the microwave oven is too low. Manufacturers have worked to overcome this with a slide out drawer and/or controls that are rotated upward. That's a great solution. Here is another possibility that builders or designers could work into their plan. I really like this one. Nearly any brand or model of countertop or even drawer microwave oven will fit in this location. This particular Jenn-Air is designed as a built-in microwave, and is available in either a 30" or 27" width. The raised granite breakfast bar is also super convenient. Of course this design -

Get more from a new kitchen island
Four Kitchen Island Ideas It seems hard to imagine a kitchen these days without either a peninsula or island of some type. With today's open kitchen designs, the extra workspace comes in very handy. Here are a few kitchen island ideas for kitchens of various sizes and shapes. 1. Wheel-In Kitchen Island Belmont White Kitchen Island This roll about cart from Crate&Barrel can serve as a work table or as convenient roll-in seating for a small kitchen. Roll it out of the way if you need the space to maneuver around the kitchen 2. Basic Kitchen Island Credit: Trackmeetsonline If you have room to add a permanent kitchen island, here's one that fits basic needs of an island with workspace, and seating for two. It's great for food prep or for your morning coffee and roll: the French call that morning cuppa with croissant a petit dejuener. 3. Kitchen Appliance Island I'm kind of an appliance guy, so I have to point out that a kitchen island can be a great place for appliances. Get that microwave off the counter and into the island. The microwave pictured above works well, but I really like the convenience of the microwave drawer for an under counter unit. The wall oven shown in the above picture is particularly useful for an accessible kitchen. If plumbing is available, another favorite use on a kitchen island is for a sink. Either a main sink or a small prep sink can make the island even more -

Kitchen Remodeling Tips #2
Kitchen Island Ideas What can you do with a kitchen island? We're appliance guys. Mostly, we like kitchen islands that provide space to build in kitchen appliances. We like islands with shelves built-in, because there's no such thing as a good place to put a microwave oven on a kitchen counter. We like them even more if we can also put a built-in oven nearby. By the way, both of these ideas make the appliance accessible, and can be part of a thoughtful universal design. We love slide-in ranges. Several appliance manufacturers have recently introduced new slide-in range models. Slide-in ranges work very well in islands. Make sure that you plan for ventilation. Let's concede that islands can serve purposes other than provide room for our precious appliances. This island has a butcher block countertop. Great for food prep. Speaking of food prep, an island sink can be a big help if food preparation is a primary function of the island. At the other extreme, this table in the kitchen is great for meals, and family gatherings, but not so much to chop lettuce on. Here's an island that is really multi-purpose. Sink, appliances, and bar stools that are convenient for an informal meal, or to just visit and nosh. From the above, you can see that kitchen islands can be multi-function. For appliances and plumbing fixtures for your island, count on the experts at Universal Appliance and Kitchen Center for the best availability and lowest prices. -

Great Solutions for Small Kitchens
Designs and Ideas for Small Kitchen Spaces How to get by when you don't have room. *Designer Joanna Simmons suggests that if you have a tiny kitchen space, blow out the ceiling to create some volume. A skylight like the one pictured below might also help. I also really like the idea of pull-outs such as a cutting board or a drop-down table to create an instant eating area. Another idea is taller upper cabinets for extra storage if ceiling space allows. Depending on your cooking needs, forget the standard 30" range and consider a 24" or even 20" range. Some urban folks, rarely cook at home. You might consider a simple 2 burner cooktop supplemented by a convection microwave, or even better one of the new steam/convection ovens. There are lots of choices for built-in appliances that fit in a 24" cabinet. Creative lighting will help the room look more spacious. Consider under cabinet lighting. LED's give you a lot of light and take up little room. Of course, white or other light colors can make a room look bigger, and even small windows and skylights for natural light help enormously. If you can get by with an undercounter refrigerator, here's one from Danby that has a separate freezer compartment. Perhaps width, not height is the issue. Here's a Liebherr refrigerator that's a tall 79 inches in height, but only 24 inches wide. It's surprising how true the saying is "Necessity is the mother of invention." For more ideas -

Placement of Wall Ovens
Finding the Ideal Location for Your Wall Oven Many customers spend hours on the internet, and in showrooms researching wall ovens for their new kitchen. Should it be a single oven, double oven, or combination oven/microwave? Is convection important? What about steam? HOLD ON!! First things first! You need to have a kitchen layout, before you begin the selection process. Where will the oven or ovens be located, and are you going to have the requisite power available? Not too high nor too low, but just right for YOU. Unfortunately, wall ovens too often get placed either too high or too low for convenient operation. Since it's a new installation, why should you settle? You don't want an oven control panel so high that you need to be on your tiptoes to operate it. Nor do you want one so low that your back goes into spasms every time you place an item on the lower rack. Take a moment before deciding on the perfect oven to find the perfect location for the oven. New oven designs are available so that you can also choose among traditional drop down oven doors, side swing doors, or even French doors. Click below for blogs covering: Appliance trends French door and side swing ovens Would one of these new options work well for you? Here are a few choices to consider: Microwaves are now often finding new places to fit in the kitchen. Counter height is ideal, but not always practical. Undercounter is
