Taking a Look at GE's New Slate Appliances
Slate: A new color from GE that's not quite Stainless Steel GE has launched a new appliance color, Slate, that quite literally takes the shine off stainless steel. It's worth a look. The muted grey finish really goes well with a variety of cabinet as well as countertop finishes. GE says that it not only looks good in a matched suite, but also works well in a kitchen with Stainless or other color appliances. The shiny brushed metal touch points (knobs, handles, etc.) provide a bit of contrast and also help bridge the slate color to tie together with stainless or other brushed finishes in a kitchen. Unlike Stainless Steel, the Slate finish resists fingerprints and is easy to keep clean. The subdued slate color is both unique and sophisticated. Offsetting a flat finish with bright polished accents gives the appliance an eye-appealing, streamlined look. The Slate Collection from GE includes a Freestanding French-Door Refrigerator, a choice of Ranges in both Electric and Gas, Over the Range Microwave, and Dishwashers. See selected slate products and features below: GE® ENERGY STAR® 28.6 Cu. Ft. How Long Do Appliances Last?
When should I replace a major appliance? Seems like an easy question to answer doesn't it? There is a chart below that shows the average life of appliances, but there really is much more that you should know, to decide if it is time for you to replace an appliance. The chart below shows the average life of appliances by category. So, if a refrigerator has an average life span of 13 years that means that some refrigerators last 20 years or more and others don't last past 5 years. There are many reasons for this. Some users maintain their appliances better than others. When was the last time you brushed the dust off your refrigerator condenser coils? Some owners simply use their appliances more often than others. Some dishwashers get used nearly every day, and others only once a week. Some brands and appliance models are built to last longer. Research your purchase to get the most durable appliance you can. There is a law of averages at work here. There is no way you can tell for sure whether any individual appliance will break down before or after its average life expectancy date. Of course, sometimes perfectly good refrigerators get "retired" because homeowners want to replace them with the latest and greatest models. Maybe they can justify a new purchase by moving the old unit up to their cabin, or give it to a son or daughter who is just starting -

Doing Business with a Kitchen Appliance Professional
Major appliances are classified as consumer durables. They last for several years and they are expensive. Customers making major appliance purchases deserve professional help. Unfortunately, too many consumers seek out department stores, electronic stores, or home improvement chains to make their appliance purchases. These chains run lots of ads in the paper and on TV touting low prices, but when it comes to providing help on getting the product that fits your needs as well as your budget, customers can be left in the lurch.Sales associates from home improvement stores may be completely untrained in appliances, knowing more about lightbulbs or gardening. The help in electronic chains seem to barely be out of high school and know mostly about cell phones and Nintendo. If you want to get an appliance that will do the job for you and save money at the same time, consider visiting with one of the Pros at Universal Appliance and Kitchen Center (UAKC). They have a fantastic display of appliances, and carry most major brands from popular mass brands to esoteric luxury brands. While you are welcome to browse at your leisure, when you need help, an appliance and kitchen specialist is there to answer your questions. They won't waste your time either. They'll ask the right questions, and get you to the product that works best for you. Make a good fit.
Appliances need to "fit" your home in more than one way. Sure the dimensions must be right, but appliances must also be "right" for your house in value perception. If you live in a mansion in a luxury gated community, you wouldn't show off a 17 cu. ft. top freezer mass brand refrigerator (Frigidaire, Amana, Hotpoint) in your gourmet kitchen. On the other hand, if you have an entry level production home, you probably should not be installing a $12,000 built-in refrigerator (SubZero, Miele, Gaggenau) in a galley kitchen. Admittedly, these are extreme examples. If the budget allows, consider "taking it up a notch" on your appliances. Let your kitchen sell your house by being the best available when compared to other homes in the same price range, but do not let your kitchen far exceed the kitchens in comparable homes or you will not get a return on your investment. Worse yet, is the luxury home with cheap looking appliances and brands that don't fit with high end buyer expectations. Real estate experts say installing bargain basement appliances in a luxury home, can greatly reduce the value of the home and make it hard to sell. Fortunately, Universal Appliance and Kitchen Center carries most major brands from economy mass brands to the most esoteric luxury appliances.
