New Products from 2017 KBIS/IBS
UAKC Brings New Appliances to Soucal MarketNew Dacor Appliances for 2017At the recent 2017 KBIS (Kitchen and Bath Show) held in Orlando, Dacor Appliances introduced a remarkable new column refrigerator. These built-in column refrigerators have become quite popular in recent years. The single unified door creates appealing uninterrupted vertical lines versus the look of traditional built-in units with a horizontal compressor compartment on the top. But, column refrigerators are nothing new. What makes this refrigerator unique? Dubbed the Heritage™ Column Refrigeration Collection, the new refrigerators and their companion freezers are equipped with 4 advances that are at the forefront of refrigerator engineering. 1. The new Energy Star® line-up is equipped with an advanced environmentally safer refrigerant and has earned the 2017 E-Star Emerging Technology Award from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). 2. The Dacor Columns tout the largest storage capacity in the industry among comparable width column refrigerators. It's a decided plus: more storage in the same space. While #1 and #2 above are clear advantages and well-worth mentioning, #3 and #4 below are the convenience features that really caught my attention! 3. “The auto-open door provides virtually hands-free access, and... 4. ..each refrigerator includes a built-in camera that enables owners to monitor their groceries on the Dacor iQ Kitchen™ mobile application,” said Dacor President and CEO Chuck Huebner.Anybody who has stood in front of the fridge, hands full of groceries, reaching for the door, will appreciate a refrigerator that opens with a simple touch. And the built-in camera which lets you -

When to call an appliance repairman?
Getting your appliance repairedWhen NOT to call for repairLast week my wife informed me that our dishwasher was broken. When I asked her what the problem was she said it just didn't work. It wouldn't even start. I asked her if she'd been under the sink that day. "Sure" she replied, "but what does that have to do with the dishwasher being broke." "It's simple. It is unplugged." I said, pointing to the dislodged dishwasher cord on the back wall underneath the sink. This would NOT have been a time to call for a repairman. Before calling for appliance repair be sure that cords, hoses, etc. are all connected. Also, open the breaker box and make sure that no circuit breakers have been tripped. Review your operating instructions. There may be a "before you call for service" section in the back of the manual. This is all designed to avoid the embarrassment and cost of paying for a service call when the only thing the repairman does is flip a switch. When TO call for appliance repairBeyond the obvious disconnections or blown fuses, call for service. The last time I needed service was just a few years ago, when the bottom of the freezer section in my refrigerator became covered with ice. I knew exactly what the problem was. There was a defrost drain tube in the back of the freezer section that was clogged and wouldn't drain, causing water to drain on to the freezer floor and freeze into a large -

Choosing the Right Refrigerator Style
Selecting a New RefrigeratorBasic ConfigurationsThere are four basic refrigerator configurations that comprise the full-size home refrigerator category.Top Freezer style refrigerator/freezers are a bit of a dinosaur for most homes, but they are still found in apartments and in kitchens where space is really limited. They're at the bottom of the scale in price and features. Universal Appliance and Kitchen Center (UAKC) can provide quotes for apartment managers, builders, and other multi-family needs. Bottom Freezer refrigerators, while not the most popular refrigerator configuration, are still preferred by some. A more modern version of the Bottom Freezer refrigerator is the French Door Refrigerator - a Bottom Freezer fridge with split doors above the freezer. French Door refrigerators have become very popular over the last 20 years as customers have opted for the convenience of a freezer on the bottom and full width refrigerator space on the top accessible by split doors. Recent variations of the French Door refrigerator configuration include multiple compartments and doors. Side-by-Side refrigerators have freezer space accessible through a door on the left side and refrigerator space on the other.Refrigerator depths and heightWithin the 4 refrigerator configurations, there are the different refrigerator depths that will affect how your refrigerator appears in the kitchen space.Full-Depth refrigerators can have a depth of 30 or more inches causing them to stick out from standard 24 inch cabinets and adjacent 25 1/2 inch countertops. Counter-Depth refrigerators while -

Advances in Refrigerators
We've Come a Long WayGE Refrigerator with Keurig Coffee Cartridge at UAKCGeneral Electric (GE) recently launched a new French Door Refrigerator that sports a Keurig Coffee Cartridge. Owners of this refrigerator can clear their countertops of coffee makers. The GE refrigerator with the Keurig Cartridge will brew up a fresh cup of coffee, tea, hot chocolate, etc. just like a Keurig coffee maker.Frankly, when I first saw GE's new fridge being demonstrated at a trade show, I smiled and dismissed this as just another gimmick. Recently, I asked myself if I was giving this a fair hearing. Back in the 70's manufacturers added water and ice dispensers in the doors of refrigerators, I'm sure that someone like me thought that was silly. After all, how hard is it to open the door of your refrigerator to access ice and water. Jeez!!Seriously, making a fresh, hot cup of coffee or other hot beverage, quickly with no muss or fuss is pretty cool. So, here's the scoop direct from GE on this new innovative refrigerator feature.GE CAFÉ™ SERIES ENERGY STAR® 22.2 CU. FT. COUNTER-DEPTH FRENCH-DOOR REFRIGERATOR WITH KEURIG® K-CUP® BREWING SYSTEMCHOOSE YOUR BREWThe single serve brewer is designed to accept a variety of K-Cup pods so you can enjoy coffee, tea, cider, and hot cocoa all from the refrigerator. Plus, it’s dishwasher safe for easy cleanup.FILTERED FRESHNESSEnjoy coffee made with fresh, filtered water thanks to our exclusive filtration system. KBIS 2016 New Appliances
IBS/KBIS 2016 more new products...and one more thingLiebherr Under Counter Slide-Out RefrigeratorComing Soon to Universal Appliance and Kitchen CenterIt's no secret that there is considerable growth in the undercounter appliance category. At the January 2016 Kitchen and Bath Show (KBIS) in Las Vegas Liebherr showed a unique "pull-out" undercounter refrigerator. Here's what they said about the UPR 503:"The new UPR 503 undercounter pull-out refrigerator ensures that fresh food is always within reach. Combining high energy efficiency with optimal storage space, the UPR 503 can be adjusted in height to match that of the countertop for perfect alignment with your kitchen design. The UPR 503 offers maximum ease-of-use thanks to its SoftTelescopic system of self-retracting and fully-extendable tiered storage compartments. This is the perfect space-saving addition for any kitchen or living area."The growth in the undercounter appliance category is a reflection of the practicality and the increasing need for accessibility for everyone. This includes our largest demographic group, baby-boomers, as well as all those in our population who for any number of reasons don't have easy reach for food stored higher than counter height. While at one time, most under counter refrigerator products were inexpensive fridges for college dorm rooms, major luxury and specialty brands such as Sub Zero and U-line, and now Liebherr are recognizing that accessible is not age or price point driven, but need driven. Regardless of your interest in undercounter refrigerators or other major appliances and plumbing fixtures, you're sure to find what you need at Universal -

New Appliances At 2016 CES
What's New in Appliances at CESOddly, CES (the Consumer Electronics Show) has become THE place for several appliance manufacturers to show their latest innovations. It's odd, since the rest of the appliance industry seems to have settled on the joint IBS (International Builders Show) /KBIS (Kitchen and Bath Industry Show) to display their wares. The IBS/KBIS show is to be held near the end of January also in Las Vegas. This year's CES hosted appliance manufacturers showing refrigerators with touch screens, fridges that revealed their contents with a knock on the door, and a refrigerator that claims to have re-invented ways to organize your refrigerator. Not to mention an interesting update on a washing machine within a washing machine that was launched at last year's CES.Knock on the door of this refrigeratorThe "smart" refrigerator from LG is loaded with high tech features, but the most interesting feature requires a manual knock on the door which activates a lighting system that reveals the contents inside the fridge.Washer Washer DryerIn 2015, LG first launched this washer within a washer, eg. a full-sized washer with a mini washer in a bottom compartment. This year, it appears that the full-sized washer has been converted to a combo full-sized washer/dryer still with mini washer at the bottom.Easy to Organize French Door RefrigeratorFrench Door refrigerators have become so popular partly because of the ease of seeing and arranging the contents. In this new CES award winning refrigerator from Whirlpool, redesigned lighting, shelves and compartments as well -

Choosing a New Refrigerator
2 Main Decisions When Buying A New RefrigeratorTime to get a new refrigerator? Here are two fundamental decisions you might think about before you go shopping.1. Door ConfigurationsRefrigerators come with their doors configured in three fundamental ways.Top-Mount RefrigeratorsThe simplest refrigerator door setup is a two-door refrigerator with the freezer on the top. Otherwise known as Top Mount refrigerators, these refrigerators seem to have been around forever. They're commonly inexpensive entry level refrigerators, and often used in apartments.Bottom-Mount RefrigeratorsRefrigerators with the freezer on the bottom include models that have bottom doors that swing open, or more often, bottom freezer doors that slide out. Many people like the convenience of a wide refrigerator compartment on the top and freezer storage below.French-Door RefrigeratorsIn the 1990's, Amana introduced Bottom-Mount Refrigerators with a split refrigerator door referred to as French-Door Refrigerators. As they became popular, other brands introduced their own versions. In the late 1990's, Jenn-Air (a sister company of Amana), launched cabinet-depth French Door refrigerators.Today there are many versions of refrigerators with a top refrigerator split door configuration and bottom doors and drawers that serve various purposes.Side-by-Side RefrigeratorsDespite the popularity of various configurations of French-Door Refrigerators, the Side-by-Side Refrigerator still holds on to a large share of new refrigerator sales. Buyers say that they like having frozen foods readily available without having to search through a deep freezer bin to find things.2. Refrigerator type by depthYou will also need to choose not only the overall size of your refrigerator in terms of cu.ft., but -

Checking Appliance Dimensions
Getting Appliances that Fit Your Space Measure Twice - Install Once When buying new appliances it's a good idea to double check dimensions and openings. Width, height, and depth are just the beginning. Universal Appliance and Kitchen Center (UAKC) can help you get appliances that fit in your space. Here are a few tips to get started: Refrigerators In the case of a refrigerator, consider also how much clearance you will need for air circulation. Will the doors open fully without banging into a wall or cabinet? Even if the refrigerator door will open 90 degrees with an adjacent wall, make certain the refrigerator door swings out wide enough to enable you to open the crisper drawers. Some 72" tall counter depth refrigerators could have a clearance issue with upper cabinets. Not only does the refrigerator case need to slide in the space, but the hinges need to clear if the upper cabinets extend forward to the front of the refrigerator Dishwashers In tight spaces, avoid putting dishwashers with handles near a corner. You'll quickly find that adjacent cabinet drawers cannot open because they are blocked by the dishwasher handle. The same problem could occur with other appliances so make sure that there is sufficient clearance when appliance doors and cabinet doors open into each. Cooking Appliances Ranges and cooktops should not be placed at the end of a cabinet run. Placing cooking surfaces against an adjacent wall is a fire hazard. A wall oven next to a refrigerator
