Thinking about a trash compactor?
Should you buy a trash compactor?Trash compactors first became popular in the 70's. Today, trash compactors are part of the lineup for most appliance manufacturers. The pros of buying a trash compactor include: 1) the convenience of having fewer trips taking the trash out, and 2) the benefit of a smaller footprint at our waste disposal sites by compressing your trash 5 times. However, there is the thought that recycle bins are more environmentally helpful. It's worth pointing out that these solutions are not mutually exclusive. In fact, if you typically recycle, you might consider using a compactor exclusively for recyclables. How trash compactors work.Trash compactors have a powerful motor that will compress trash as much as 5:1 when activated, compressing loose contents into a small package. Typically, compactors will fit in a standard depth 24" deep cabinet, and at 34 1/2" tall will fit nicely under a standard 36" countertop. The most common width is 15". Most compactors also have a deodorizer or charcoal filter. Universal Appliance and Kitchen Center can help. UAKC sells all the major trash compactor brands, as well as the premium and luxury brands, from the popularly priced Whirlpool brand to a luxury Viking brand compactor and everything in between. One super-premium brand, Jenn-Air has just launched a new compactor. Below are the details on Jenn-Air's new compactor:Efficiently reduce your trash by up to 80% with the Jenn-Air® Trash Compactor. It's equipped with Anti-Jam and Tilt Sensors for smooth operation on large waste products. Features:5:1 -

Pros and Cons of Stainless Steel Appliances
Choosing Appliance FinishesStainless steel appliances are de rigueur these days. It seems that whether you live in a tract home or a mansion, you're going to end up with stainless steel. Everyone will tell you that you need stainless steel for you home's resale value, and there may be some truth in that. In addition, in some more exclusive brands, it appears that stainless steel is all that they offer. It wasn't always this way, but stainless steel gradually took over when people started expressing an interest in restaurant or commercial style appliances in their kitchen. Here are some of the other reasons homeowners give for choosing stainless:Sanitary "hospital" cleanliness.Doesn't rust or stain (Duh - it's stainless).Appealing, shiny appearanceEasily wipes offDurable finish - can't chipenhances resale value of houseSome products are available only in stainless (eg. built-in coffee maker)While stainless steel is not going away soon, there are many alternatives. White and black are still standard finishes for entry level brands. Frigidaire has a version of stainless steel that doesn't show fingerprints -really, it works. GE has a slate finish which clearly isn't stainless, it's a dull grey finish, but works for a faux stainless look without the disadvantages of stainless. It accepts magnets and doesn't require the polishing. Most premium brands will also offer white and black appliances with stainless upgrades, though I've heard of at least one brand offering customers a choice of only black or stainless appliances. Moving up to luxury brands, color -

Choosing a new luxury range
3 Reasons to upgrade your rangeIf you're shopping for a new range (stove), at some point your sales associate will need to know whether you want a "standard" range such as those provided by the big name household appliance companies GE, Whirlpool, and Frigidaire (Electrolux), if you'd rather narrow your selection to luxury ranges for example, Wolf, Viking, or Thermador. You might even want something in between, maybe KitchenAid, Bertazonni, or Bosch. While budget is always important, there are other considerations when moving up from standard model ranges to more deluxe brands and models. Here are three common situations: 1. New luxury homeSo, you're moving into a new neighborhood with custom homes, and a luxury kitchen is de rigueur. Let your sales associate know that you'd like to confine your search for ranges to the more premium brands. 2. Upgrade or Kitchen RemodelIf you are doing a complete remodel of your kitchen, this would be a good time to consider elevating your appliance selections, especially when it comes to cooking appliances. Here's where the Goldilocks rule comes into play. You want appliances that are right for your future home - not too basic, not too luxurious, but just right. Consider, the eventual resale value of your house. If your neighborhood has greatly appreciated over the years, your new kitchen needs to be be able to capture that growth in value with appliances that meet the expectations of a more exclusive buyer. 3.
