Speed Queen - an Old Brand that's New Again
A Legendary Brand ResurfacesCommercial Quality Washers and Dryers at UAKCSpeed Queen traces its origins to 1908 when Joe Barlow and John Seeling began tearing down hand operated washing machines with the idea of creating an automatic version. By 1911 they had added an electric motor to power the machine, and began selling automatic washers. By 1939 Speed Queen introduced a Stainless Steel tub, a feature that identified the brand, and is still used today.Speed Queen continued to grow both as a home brand and in commercial and coin-operated laundries. The company became part of McGraw-Edison, Raytheon, and eventually Alliance Laundry Systems. The largest commercial laundry company in the U.S., Alliance re-launced Speed Queen as a residential brand for home several years ago. It's built with their commercial quality, and includes many of Speed Queen's signature features including an industry-leading warranty. Here's what they have to say about their warranty and a run-down on a featured Speed Queen laundry pair.THE LONGEST LASTING WASHERS WITH A WARRANTY TO MATCHThe best top load washer on the market also comes with the best warranty. The first example is a full-sized front loading washer and dryer stacked pair. Model shown includes a gas dryer, but electric dryer option is also available. The second option is a washer/dryer combination in a single unit. Quite common in Europe, the combo provides washing and drying in a single unit. Paralysis by Analysis
Deciding on a new appliance.UAKC can help you make the right decision.Recently, I wanted to buy an additional monitor for my office computer setup. I shopped around, and knew the prices, features, and sizes that would work for me. Yet, I agonized endlessly over this model or that, and I just couldn't decide. Suddenly, it struck me that I spent less time deciding over a new car that costs tens of thousands than over an inexpensive electronic device that cost only a few hundred dollars. Why was I spending all this time debating back and forth over something that cost so little? This is called paralysis by analysis. To one degree or another, we all have it. If you need a new refrigerator, a washer and dryer, or even an entire suite of kitchen appliances, you don't want to make a mistake....but, you also don't want to needlessly deny yourself these new appliances just because of your paralysis by analysis syndrome. Here's a suggestion: Call or visit Universal Appliance and Kitchen Center. I've know these folks for a long time (long before I began writing these blogs). They won't waste your time. They are very knowledgeable. Tell them what your situation is, and in no time at all they'll make a few recommendations. They'll try to match your requests for brand, quality level, pricing, etc. with the best overall choices that fit your needs. With their large selection of brands, and great pricing you really won't need to be shopping around. Porcelain in Appliances
Where did the porcelain go? Back in the day, nearly all major appliances used porcelain somewhere. Dishwashers had porcelain tubs. Washers and dryers had porcelain tops and lids, and most washers had porcelain tubs. Early ranges used porcelain everywhere, and even today ranges use porcelain oven interiors and many have porcelain tops. Refrigerators evolved from porcelain inside and out (including crispers and liners) to now having no porcelain whatsoever. Porcelain finishes were desirable and manufacturers bragged about them.Making porcelain on steel appliance parts is a complex and expensive process. In addition, environmental issues exist not only at the manufacturing level, but also in disposing of appliances at the end of life. Therefore, over time manufacturers have greatly reduced the use of porcelain in appliances.Inexpensive dishwashers now have plastic tubs, and upscale models feature stainless steel interiors. Refrigerators have plastic crispers and interiors which also allow energy-saving foam-in-place insulation. While you might find washers and dryers with porcelain tops, many now feature a high gloss, durable, painted finish. Inside, very few washers have porcelain tubs. Inexpensive washers might have plastic tubs, while the premium models have tubs made of stainless steel. However, range ovens and built-in ovens still use primarily porcelain for their oven interiors. As a consumer, you should take note of the appliances you have that have porcelain finishes or interiors. When it comes time to dispose of these products, they'll need to be properly recycled. Check local or state regulations and find a certified recycling center for your appliance. -

Spring Cleaning for Your Appliances
Taking care of your appliancesFour Appliance Tips to Keep your Appliances Fit Clean your dryer duct. There's a reason why this is the first tip. Supposedly, the number one cause of house fires is clogged dryer vents. The lint trap on your dryer should be cleaned after each use, but the external vent hose and in-wall vent should be checked annually, and professionally cleaned if necessary. If your clothes are taking longer and longer to dry, or if your clothes come out of the dryer and/or the dryer cabinet gets very hot, those are good signs that your vent is clogged. In some cases, with short direct vents you can clean them yourself. Otherwise, you may need to have them cleaned professionally. Change your refrigerator water filter. This one you can do yourself. If it hasn't been done in the past year, you should definitely replace it. Otherwise, check the use and care manual. Clean your oven (if it is dirty). There are now a lot of different oven cleaning systems, such as Aqualift®, steam clean, and the familiar pyrolytic self-clean systems. Depending on your oven brand and type your cleaning system may vary. If all your oven needs is to be wiped down with hot soapy water, then you're good to go. Otherwise, use the cleaning system provided for your specific oven. Check your washer fill hoses. Make sure that there are no leaks, and no cracks or split hoses. If the hoses are old or brittle, they should -

New Appliances At 2016 CES
What's New in Appliances at CESOddly, CES (the Consumer Electronics Show) has become THE place for several appliance manufacturers to show their latest innovations. It's odd, since the rest of the appliance industry seems to have settled on the joint IBS (International Builders Show) /KBIS (Kitchen and Bath Industry Show) to display their wares. The IBS/KBIS show is to be held near the end of January also in Las Vegas. This year's CES hosted appliance manufacturers showing refrigerators with touch screens, fridges that revealed their contents with a knock on the door, and a refrigerator that claims to have re-invented ways to organize your refrigerator. Not to mention an interesting update on a washing machine within a washing machine that was launched at last year's CES.Knock on the door of this refrigeratorThe "smart" refrigerator from LG is loaded with high tech features, but the most interesting feature requires a manual knock on the door which activates a lighting system that reveals the contents inside the fridge.Washer Washer DryerIn 2015, LG first launched this washer within a washer, eg. a full-sized washer with a mini washer in a bottom compartment. This year, it appears that the full-sized washer has been converted to a combo full-sized washer/dryer still with mini washer at the bottom.Easy to Organize French Door RefrigeratorFrench Door refrigerators have become so popular partly because of the ease of seeing and arranging the contents. In this new CES award winning refrigerator from Whirlpool, redesigned lighting, shelves and compartments as well
