Cleaning New Ranges and Ovens
Various Range and Oven cleaning typesCheck them out at Universal Appliance and Kitchen CenterIf you're purchasing a new range or oven, you'll want to know how it cleans. An entry level range is likely not to have any cleaning cycle, so the cleaning is going to be do it yourself, perhaps with caustic oven cleaner. When moving up to more fully-featured ranges and ovens you'll find pyrolytic self-cleaning ovens. When the oven gets dirty, you select the self-cleaning cycle, the oven locks and for 2-4 hours gets extremely hot, and incinerates any burnt on spills. At the high end of the market, some of the luxury brand commercial looking stainless gas ranges and ovens may not have any automatic cleaning cycles. In the last few years GE, Maytag, Whirlpool, and others have begun offering other steam cleaning options for light cleaning of oven interiors. The consumer adds a cup or so of water to the bottom of the oven and selects a steam cleaning cycle. After 25 minutes the soil in the bottom of the oven has been loosened and the oven can be sponged out. For heavier cleaning, pyrolytic self-cleaning is still an optionWhirlpool and Maytag also offer a low temperature self-cleaning technology called Aqualift on some models. It also uses water, but Aqualift models are considered "self-clean" and do not have a pyrolytic self-clean option. Here's how Aqualift is described -

Side by Side Refrigerators
Choosing a New Side by Side Refrigerator While French door refrigerators seem to be all the rage these days, side by side refrigerator still hold a significant share of refrigerator industry sales. Reasons for customers preferring side by side refrigerators include the better access to the freezer compartments (i.e. no digging to find the ice cream), less critical space used for ice storage, and overall better organization and visibility. Whatever your reason, if a side by side is your choice here are three fundamental choices you need to make. Universal Appliance and Kitchen Center can help you choose the configuration that works best for you. Built-In A built-in side by side will fit flush inside your cabinet space, and could even be "integrated" with matching cabinet panels and hidden hinges. Depending on the brand, size, and features this refrigerator could cost $10,000 or more. Counter depth A counter depth side by side refrigerator is going to fit nearly flush with the countertops (25") not counting the door. While they're not built-in, they're attractive looking, and blend into the surrounding cabinets nicely. Full depth A full or standard depth refrigerator will protrude from the kitchen cabinets. This style refrigerator offers more capacity, but can often be 35" deep or more. Consumers often complain about having to navigate around the refrigerator. As you can see, there are tradeoffs among the 3 basic refrigerator configurations. In addition, you'll need to decide among models featuring dispensers and non-dispenser models. You may also have a -

Top Loading Agitator-Type Washing Machines
Traditional Washing Machines Still Popular Get the Best Selection of New Washers at Universal Appliance and Kitchen Center When choosing a new washing machine consumers are faced with three basic types of washers. Front loading washing machines with horizontal wash cylinders, HE (High Efficiency) top loading washers, and traditional agitator type top loading washing machines. Universal Appliance and Kitchen Center (UAKC) carries all three washer configurations.Traditional agitator type top loading washers, like Mom (or Grandma) use to have, are the most economical to purchase and the most expensive to operate. They use much more water than either HE top loaders or front load washers. The tub fills with water for the wash cycle immersing the clothes. The agitator chugs back and forth like a food mixer stirring the clothes in the soapy water. The wash cycle is followed by a rinse cycle to remove the soap, which is followed by spinning the final rinse water out of the machine. Many homemakers swear by their old agitator-type machines, and the major brands, GE, Whirlpool, Frigidaire, Maytag, etc. still make and sell a lot of them. Another brand worth looking at in the top load configuration is Speed Queen. A leader in the commercial laundry field, Speed Queen is a durable product with a heavy duty motor and transmission and a stainless steel tub. While traditional top load washers use more water, they cost less than equivalent front load and HE -

Many Major Appliances are Made in the U.S.
Where are cooking appliances made? Customers often want to know where an appliance is manufactured. A surprising number of major appliances sold in the U.S. are manufactured here also. Let's take a look at cooking products. Here are where the Big 3 appliance manufacturers in the U.S. (Whirlpool, Electrolux/Frigidaire, and GE) make their ranges, cooktops, and ovens. Whirlpool Corporation also includes Amana, Jenn-Air, KitchenAid, and Maytag brands. They have a large facility (one million sq. ft.) in Cleveland, Tenn. where freestanding and slide-in ranges are built, as well as cooktops and wall ovens. In addition, they also build some ranges in their Tulsa, Oklahoma facility. Headquartered in Benton Harbor, Michigan, Whirlpool is the largest appliance manufacturer in the world. Over 80% of the appliances that Whirlpool sells in the U.S. are manufactured here. Whirlpool claims to employ more U.S. workers than all their competitors combined. Electrolux/Frigidaire has their range factory in Springfield, Tennessee, and has build a new cooktop facility near Memphis. It's worth noting that the Swedish firm Electrolux is the 2nd largest appliance manufacturer in the world, and has a major U.S. presence. GE makes ranges and ovens in their Roper facility in Lafayette, GA. GE also has strong ties to Mabe, a Mexican appliance company that builds GE's gas ranges. In spite of GE's affiliation with Mabe (GE has a 48% stake), GE is a leader in "insourcing", and has been adding appliance manufacturing jobs in the U.S. for several years. In addition, GE is quite proud -

4th of July Washer and Dryer Sale
Get the Best Deal on Washers and DryersGood Advice for Buying a New Washer and DryerThere are a lot of washers and dryers sold during 4th of July Holiday period. Unfortunately, customers rushing to buy the lowest price or the biggest discount often get products that don't suit their needs. Advertised specials are very tempting, but you shouldn't have to settle for a product that's too noisy or doesn't have the cycles you need to do the job. Here's a quote from a customer who bought a really low end washing machine from a home improvement store. “This is not a washer you can start and walk away from to do other things…. I hate this machine with the passion of 1000 white hot suns. I would go on, but it is laundry day and I have to go back downstairs to babysit the washer.” Don't let this happen to you. Universal Appliance and Kitchen Center (UAKC) can help you make the best choice that suits your needs at the lowest possible price. UAKC sells all the major laundry brands - Frigidaire, GE, LG, Maytag, Samsung, Whirlpool, and more. Here is a recommendation. Take some time to assess your needs. A new washer will likely fall into one of three categories: Front load washer. These washers open and close from the front. They're energy efficient and use very little water. A full-sized version will cost more than the traditional agitator type washer that Mom used to have. Top load high efficiency (HE) -

Under Counter Ice Machines and Ice Makers
Choosing an Ice Machine or Ice Maker at UAKC If you find yourself going through more ice than your refrigerator's icemaker can produce, it may be time to consider getting a separate unit to make your ice. Universal Appliance and Kitchen Center (UAKC) has Southern California's best availabilty and lowest prices for undercounter ice machines and icemakers. There are two basic types of ice producing appliances available. Undercounter icemakers work on the same principle as the icemaker in a refrigerator. They are actually downsized freezers that have an icemaker built in. The icemaker consists of a tray that fills with water. The water freezes into cubes, and the icemaker "harvests" the cubes by dumping them into a container in the bottom of the freezer. The process repeats itself until the container fills with ice. Then the icemaker quits making ice until the ice level in the container starts to drop. The ice cubes are kept frozen by a cooling unit in the icemaker. An ice machine has a metal mold or cold plate. Water is continually sprayed upward onto the cold plate and freezes. Contaminants in the water fall off leaving clear ice. Heat is then used to separate the clear cubes from the mold or plate and the cubes fall into the bin below. Unlike an icemaker, an ice machine has no separate cooling unit to keep the ice cubes frozen. The ice machine continues to replenish the ice -

Buying a Clothes Dryer
When to buy a clothes dryer1. When Purchasing a Washing Machine: There is no question that more dryers are purchased in connection with washer purchases than at any other time. It makes sense to have a matching dryer to go with your washer. So, it's not a surprise that around sixty percent of laundry buyers choose a matching laundry pair. A matching dryer will have the right capacity to handle a full load of clothes from the washer. Having this kind of throughput is important. When you're washing multiple loads of clothes it's nice to have the dryer available for use when the clothes are done washing. And, it sure perks up the laundry room to have a matching washer/dryer pair. 2. When you can save money:Washer/Dryer pairs are often promoted as sets. If you can get a great deal on the pair, take advantage of the savings. Ask the experts at Universal Appliance and Kitchen Center for any manufacturer specials on laundry pairs. 3. When the old dryer breaks down: Assuming "old" means 12-15 years old or more, if your dryer breaks down, there's a good chance the repair bill will exceed the value of your dryer. Time for a visit to Universal Appliance and Kitchen Center. 4. When switching from gas to electric or vice versa: If you move into a house with only a 240v receptacle for an electric dryer and you bring a
